Also go to www.dwp.gov.uk for guidance on how to apply

You are more than entitled to DLA, Wendy

My sister has been claiming it for years without half the problems you have to face!

Sorry I can't advise on claiming, but I wish you all the best :luck: :luck: :D

Just state the facts as they are, hun.

Many people make up stories in order to claim and you don't have to. Treat it as a business transaction, which is really what it is

I should imagine you would be entitled to mobility assistance for starters! :)

I think my first jobs going to be keep a direy for a bit. iv had scoliosis for so long an the op at 14 i carnt remeber life without it and the detrriargion has been so slow i just adapted so did tony its just normal with us i didnt even notice when i was younger that i couldnt stand up strate with my knees strate cos i pushed the kids about in there prams so the flatback that my rods caused just creeped up slowly. the siatica is a pain in the bum litterly but on its own it would be ok. the mildest condtion accutlys the one that tips the balance its restless legs and arms it can drive you mad when they have been jumping about for 18 hours but it the fact that the jumping hurts my back and the only why to stop it is to lie in a very very hot bath that i carnt get in or out of and at 5 am it get realy anoying i have ashama aswell but touch wood its not been to bad for a while..

its realy silly things im going to have to log down like the fact that i carnt actuly reach to put my whellchair on charge myself or actuly get it outside to use a man must have designed it lol

Hi Wendy

Just like to say go for everything you are entitled to hun , if you dont ask you dont get , why dont you ring up youre job centre or the c.a.b they should point you in the right direction

All the best x

Here's my advice hon - I used to fill these out for people as part of my job and although I'm sure some things about them have changed I bet the principle is the same.....

Firstly, you have to complete them as if you are having a bad day. Most people's energy/pain/stiffness levels change throughout the week or even the day - you need to think your head into what things are like when you are at your worst.........no need to invent things or exaggerate them, just describe how things are when you are at a low point

Secondly, complete the form as if you have a robot to do all the things for you that you can't do yourself - this robot won't get tired or feel put upon if you send it upstairs 6 times in an hour. Most people underclaim DLA because they don't include the things that they can't do for themselves but have opted to manage without because they have no way of doing them or don't want to call in so many favours. Make usre you put all these things in

Thirdly, keep your diary - defo a good idea

Forthly (if that's a word) If you don't get it - APPEAL. An ex of mine was a Welfare Rights officer who said that the majority of people who appeal go on to get DLA - think of the first refusal as just part of their filtering process - they do it to put people off DON'T BE!

and fifthly - filling out the form is horrible - it makes you dwell on everything you can't do and makes you feel like a big pile of poo. Set yourself a day to do it and arrange to go out after (as a reward) and do something nice. :)

Good luck and remember this isn't a hand-out it's something you are entitled to. You get it because life costs more for people with disabilities than it does for those who are lucky enough not to be disabled - and by that I mean Life not just Getting By :luck: :luck:

the robot thinks good advice hadnt thought of that. so thinks like if im feeling cold and my cardies upstars and im on a bad day i would ask a robot to get it were here i would wait till say tony was going up for somthing else before i asked him to get me it. it says to tell them if you use any aids to help you. i use walking sticks get about but i allso use them to hit switches to turn them on and off os i carnt reach them. so would that be a carnt do it myself or not. do i put down anything i dont do "normily" as carnt do over the years i use lots of trick and diy stuff to help me like 2 safty pins on leathgths or ribbon onmy pants so i can pull them up do i say this or not this is whats confusing me. if i drop the ribbons i have to shout tony though

Yups - the cardi thing is exactly the kind of thing I mean :)

I would definitely put all your 'home made' aids in, because they all build up a picture of your disability. So the knicker ribbons (including Tony's help if you drop them) need to go in, along with the sticks for prodding light switches.

I would say if you are using an aid for it (even a home made one) then it goes down as something you can't do for yourself - it's just that you've come up with a brilliant solution: your disability stops you doing it - your ingenuity helps you get round it.....I would explain your 'aid' though if there is space to.

Think about it this way - if your body allows you to do it, in roughly the same amount of time (or ease) as anyone else would, then put it down as something you can do - but if you need to use an aid, or it takes a lot longer than other people would, or exhausts you more than it would other people, then you need to tell them about it.....even if you have found some way to get round the problem without having to ask someone else to do it.

and if there's something that you have given up because you simply can't do it - find some way of putting it in there if you can.

Hope this helps :)
