My 8 months old male whippet is very keen on socialising with other dogs.

He doesn't like anything better that to find another dog to run with.

I do admit that even when the other dog is not keen my dog will try again and sometimes the other dog will chase because he is annoyed, but often I have noticed that dogs will then gang on him and scare him which panic him and make him run away rather than come back to us for protection.

Is it a common behaviour to all dogs or more to whippets?

How can we improve his recall when frighten?

I think most whippets think they can out run other dogs so they tend to show off, this happened to my casper when he was one what he didnt realise it wasnt just one border collie it was two so he was herded up and nipped badly on the bum, :x still didnt stop him though

I've found with Inca that she'll run and play with any dog but because she runs so fast, they can't keep up with her...so when she does eventually slow down they have a go at her...as if there trying to tell her off.

I have found that if she gets together with other whippets or lurchers, they tend to play rough with the other dogs, I think its the pack element there though.

I think that he'll learn to play with other slower dogs in time. Tess has always been great with other dogs, but she is ridculously self confident and very senstive to what other dogs are saying to her. Nana on the other hand is terrible at dog to dog communication and frequently puts other dog's backs up by mistake. She has finally learnt that she gets a much better game if she runs a bit slower, now she constantly looks over her shoulder to make sure that the other dog is keeping up and slows down or speeds up accordingly. She has made lots of friends since she learnt this and had a lot fewer tellings off.

I have to agree with Wiggley- they are terrible show offs about their speed and this can get them into trouble.

I think he'll settle down :luck:

Blue is slowly learnign the word steady ifyou catch him before take off and tell him to go steady he slows down, but his rpoblem is he likes to play with other dogs ears and it looks to the other owners that he is biting and showing his teeth which obv panics other owners can see there point i would feel the same but dont know how to stop him from doing it, so i have bn leading him near other dogs but this is hindering his social skills so looks like i can't win lol.

Its quite funny what your saying as Tilly does this, she make sure she is just in front of them. and if they wont chase her she pinches their toy and runs off with it. :- "

He did have one incident when she was being chsed by a GSD and he couldnt keep up when she finally finished her madness, he nipped her on the bum and walked of to his owner :( ...she was ok just slobber :x but i couldnt help thinking he was a bad loser :teehee:

my two seem to gang up on smaller dogs,as soon as the smaller ones run to play with them my two just have to keep rolling the poor little things, and you can imagine what the owners are like, yes petrified, we often have irrate owners telling us that our dogs are wanting to fight, and a bit of a explaination of what whippets do for amusement and the people seem fine about it.

dogs will be dogs

Yup, this exact thing happens with mine. he'll run and play with any dog, but it often ends with the other dog having a go at him when the chase finally slows down.
