I got my first dog as a birthday gift and I was wearing a Polka dots pajamas so I named her Polka. Then I started giving names that start with the letter "P" to my other dogs. My last dogs' name is Lilo though cause he was born on the same day with my mom. My mom's name is Lala. Haha!

So, how did you come up with your dogs' name? Does it have any significant meaning?

My black dog had a name change simply because I didn’t like the name gus so changed to bracken and Rio my brindle was Rio as I’m a massive Man Utd fan and we signed Rio Ferdinand,

Aggie is named after Agatha Christie - my gran and mum were both huge fans and I have all of her books. So she is the latest generation in a long Poirot lineage.

All my 'second hand' dogs in past came with a name that they had used to it so I never changed them. But with my current girls, being that they were pups I had finally chance to name a dog myself.
Older one is Iida..that's very old fashioned Finish woman's name. It is 'old' in a way that even in my Gran's time, it would have been less used and given name for her generation. But for some reason I've always liked it one time I thought that if I would ever have any kids...girl would be named Iida. Father would not had any saying at all in the matter...
Our younger one is Eva..there is no particular reason for it as that name is used in many Countries..including in Finland and I was on a look out something that is quite 'international' and easily said by my non English speaking mum as well...'fits into mouth' so to speak. And I liked it because is short..it doesn't have any particular meaning behind it as some of the names I looked turn out to have quite 'scary' meanings so I didn't want to tempt faith of having any influence from her 'warrior princess' name or something like that
So good old plain Eva it was...bit of religious origins to it didn't matter neither and when I call both of my dogs...both names roll off from the tongue easy enough so mission was complished.

As/if/when we have our third one....her name is already picked...'mouth tested' with both us so OH can say the name without difficulty too...and it is 'international' name, appearing in both of our native languages...it is short enough...doesn't have any 'funny' meanings...and goes well with our current girls names...all we need now is the dog to give it to..

A lurcher called Whizz.. leave it to your imagination how I came up with that one.

Our cats though were called Claudius, Surplus and Revs. Claud was the first, then a little kitten needed a home, we had four dogs and a cat but she came to us, so she was surplus to requirements. Later I got in the car drove a dog to the vets, hearing the odd strange noise, when I parked and switched off I could hear it coming from under the bonnet, opening it found a tiny torty kitten on top of the air filter. I brought her home we put notices all round the village but nobody claimed her so she stayed and my son decided she should be called Revs.

Muffin was given to my Shih tzu because she had this fluffy look as a puppy. And muffin was one of my favourite bake product. My other two dogs were given name from movie characters .

Milly Lurcher was called Mandy in the pound. I have a cousin called Mandy and wasn't comfortable using my cousin's name for my dog (I don't know my cousin well enough to honour her by naming my pet after her ) so Mandy became Milly:

Honey was a free to good home case, and called Krystal by her previous family (probably so named by her child owner). I hated it and it didn't suit her, so she was Honey before she left their house;

With our first dog, also a poundie, we decided we were going to keep the name given to the dog by them, but parents decided they weren't going to shout Mix Up across the field lmao, so Mix Up became Max.

I had a dog that died of a heart attack on the last day of the shooting season. She died in the back of the car unknown to me on the way home, ( the shoot was only 10 minutes from home) I opened the back of the car up to let 2 dogs out and one never got up (she was dead).
As this was our last day of the season and a "Beaters day" with a lovely evening meal thrown in, unknown to me there was a collection made and everyone (the beaters) chipped in to the kitty towards another puppy to replace the dog that had just died.
We named our new puppy "Beater" after all of our beating team and owners of the shoot.
Beater is now buried at the bottom of our garden (an old lady) but comes alive every bonfire night. (she loved fireworks and the bangs))

Most of our dogs have been rescue so have come with their names . ...we kept victor's name as he reminded us of grumpy victor meldrew......
I had always wanted to call a male Jack Russell sid ....Tinytom came with his name ...Murphy came from Ireland and his colouring looked like a pint of Murphy's.....

My rescue dogs have always kept their own names - I've called puppies usually something literary. BUT when I asked a young girl once what her tubby old lab was called she said something that's stuck; "We don't know what her real name is but we've always called her Jess." I asked if she was a rescue- but no, came as a pup. Jess certainly had a smart owner.

Two of our whippets, as rescues, came with names to which they’d respond so didn’t change them - Blue, who died a few years ago and Mabel, whom we adopted last November. We found (in 2002) a lovely lurcher pup aged about 6 months on a busy road and we took her in ‘temporarily’. I couldn’t believe that she was anything but lost and the deal I had with the dog warden was that, if no one came forward to claim her within 30 days, I could keep her. We just called her ‘puppy’ which we changed to ‘Poppy’ once she was ours. People in the know re sighthounds said that it was highly likely that she’d been abandoned by travellers - she was terrified of other dogs but would approach a sighthound the size of an elephant with a waggy tail. That was my intro to sighthounds and I’ve been smitten ever since.

Pip was a stray dog and named by the rescue . I didnt want him to go through another name change so I kept it. Libby was called Evie which is too similar to my annoying sisters name so I changed it.

We got our puppy (Husky/Labrador cross) two weeks ago and couldn't agree on a name. He looks much more like his husky dad so we got a list of husky names. I picked 'Sitka' (which is a town in Alaska) as I work in forestry and Sitka spruce is the #1 tree in UK forestry.
