Signs of dog anxiety:

It’s a good thing if your dog shows anxiety or discomfort because it means that the dog won’t just go to bite. Never tell your dog off for growling or barking. If you tell your dog off for growling/barking the dog may just jump straight into biting instead of warning you by the growl.

Examples of anxiety in dogs:

~ One paw raised – This can looks ‘cute’ but this actually means that the dog doesn’t want to be stroked/bothered, the dog is worried.

~ Half-moon eye – Your dog just wants to be left alone. When you hug your dog, they can give out the ‘half-moon eye’ if this happens then remove yourself/the dog from the situation.

~ Displacement Behaviours – These are behaviours that are ‘normal’ but used out of context: Yawning but not tiered, scratching but not itchy, wet dog shake when not wet. More information on displacement behaviour.

~ Body language – tail between legs, ears slouched down on an erect eared dog, rapid panting, urinates in another room away from you.

  • All dogs should have a ‘safe’ space. Be it a crate, room or cupboard under the stairs, but a place where they feel comfortable. You can feed them here then they could associate it with a good thing. - Safe area.

Signs that a dog is confident:

Do you think that your dog is confident?

Some dogs/puppies can be shy. Some doggies can be super friendly. But one thing is; all dogs have their own individual characters.

~ Some dogs get their confidence from their parent’s traits – if their mum is super confident and the dad is too then most likely the puppy will be also confident.

~ In some dogs it can be the way they have been brought up – What sort of life the dog has had; if the dog has not been socialised they will most likely not be as confident, unlike one who has been socialised since birth.

~ Big dogs such as- German Shepard Dogs and Dobermans are bred to look fierce and be highly confident dogs as they are mainly used for guarding.

~ The dog’s body language could be- A tall stance, raised tail, perked tail.

Have you changed your mind about your dog being confident?
