Neil and I have been together eleven years and for the eight summers that we've taken a holiday (been too skint other years!) we've headed over to the Lake District and either stayed with our friend or in a caravan.

But for 2009 Neil is ADAMANT that we are going to the Isle of Wight as he went years ago with his brother and had a great holiday and so he wants to take me and Diva so we can enjoy it too :D

I picked up a copy of the AA's book Pet Friendly Places To Stay 2009 in WH Smith last week and there's a couple of places on the IoW that look ok.

We prefer to say in a caravan, cottage or a log cabin as B&B's and hotels are rather restrictive really - we like to be able to completely relax and not just be 'restricted' to our own room. In a caravan Neil can have a lie-in whilst I do my usual getting up early and going birdwatching or walking for a couple of hours before breakfast thing :- " And he can say up late to read or watch a movie whilst I usually potter off to bed early.

Has anybody had a holiday on IoW that they can recommend? Any good places that ARE dog-friendly and, what would be perfect, not on too huge a site where there'll be hundreds of other families? We are planning to go late-September-ish when the kids are back at school and the weather's not TOO hot :)

We once had a fabulous caravan holiday on a farm just outside Windermere and there were only the three caravans in a small field and ours overlooked a larger field which had Roe Deer, Badgers and Tawny Owls in it every night.

Doesn't look like many folk have been to the IoW :- " I used to live just across the Solent and could see the Isle of Wight from my local beaches, Lepe & Calshot (only about 23 years ago now since I left :- " ) We tend to head up to the Scottish islands now.

It's a long journey for you...will you be sailing from Lymington or Portsmouth? Just curious. I'll speak to some friends who love holidaying on the IoW. They have a collie, so would know of dog friendly campsites. As the island is so small, I doubt you can go far wrong with where you choose.

It DOES look a long journey and, to be honest, I'd be much happier with a closer holiday - Scotland/Yorkshire/ perhaps even Wales or Ireland :- "

Neil was saying last week that if we take our time to drive down and break it up for Diva and probably stay in a Travelodge or something similar on the first night and then continue on the journey on Day 2 and travel over on the ferry that day. Stay on the IoW a week and then head back home over three or four days, just stopping off wherever we fancy :D

I often get emails from the Dogs Trust about dog-friendly holidays and I'm VERY tempted to work out what dates we are off with Neil and then just book somewhere up without telling him :- " I'll pay the deposit and it'll be a surprise for him  It won't be until probably September 2009 so lots of time to sort something out :p

We'll probably end up going to the Lakes again (w00t)

Actually it sounds like a pleasant way to spend a holiday. It usually takes us 8 hours to get to the Scottish Western Isles, and it's lovely to be able to break the journey at a hotel overnight. We usually stay in Onich which is right in the Glencoe Hills, on the side of a Loch. We stop at the same hotel every year, we love it! Then it's on to the ferry....holidays just wouldn't be the same without a long journey and a ferry crossing :p

If you were catching a ferry from Lymington, you could stop in The New Forest somewhere on the way. Diva would love that. No sheep to worry about and lots of rabbits! (w00t)

 I've had a wee chat with Missus Diva and told her that I really don't ike her catching rabbits so she promised me she would give that hobby up...

.....tho' I'm sure the little minx had her paws crossed when she said that! (w00t)

Seriously though, I've always fancied visiting the New Forest one day as there's so much wildlife there too. Diva completely ignores livestock - I think her gamekeeping background has trained her to ignore everything that is not 'legal prey' but, obviously, I always make sure she goes straight on the lead whenever we are anywhere near sheep, cattle & horses.

I'm just looking forward to having a nice relaxing holiday with hubby and hound :D
