Hello all,

I'm writing from California, where I am involved in pedigree whippet racing. In the past several years, the whippet racing community has seen some pups born from different bloodlines which appear to be double-muscled ("bullys").

A small group of racing folk approached the National Institute of Health's Ostrander Lab to see if they would be interested in investigating this problem. (The Ostrander Lab is the lab which mapped the canine genome.)

They were very interested and the racing community here responded with samples from every possible bloodline we could manage. The lab is now looking to expand the study to include ANY and ALL whippets, including whippets in the UK and Europe.

They are also opening the study to unregistered whippets.

In order to facilitate the sample submission process, the lab is accepting either blood samples (the usual sample mode) OR cheek swabs for this study only.

I've made the call for submissions letter available on my website at the following URL:

http://www.peavine.com/racing-l/whippet_re..._collection.pdf

As with any scientific study, the more samples received (even from unaffected and unrelated dogs), the more accurate the study results will be. Double-muscled whippets can now be found in North America, Europe, and the UK; any participation would help track down the cause of this problem.

If you have any questions about the study, the lab manager at the Ostrander Lab is available by either telephone or email and would welcome your questions.

Thanks,

jen

I should add that the only cost involved in submitting the cheek swab sample is postage.

Somone on the ped racing forum thought my first post was confusing so I figured I'd better try to clarify it.

The study is open to ALL whippets, both pedi and non-peds. They're only using the pedigrees to determine relatedness to other whippets in the study. When I asked the lab's sample manager about submissions from non-peds, she basically said "if they can provide any pedigree information, great but it's no longer a requirement."

We're all well here! It 's been the most amazing warm spraing ever, and we spend most of the time outside :- )

I took Mac to the greyhound and whippet training today, and he loved it! He is so much faster than the other whippets - made me really proud!

How are you and your lot?

Pleased Mac made you proud , he's such a lovely dog....the pic of him on the boat is my favorite

A few month's back i posted about one of my 3/4 pup's being very bully. Now to find out through this survey ,that these type are usualy a lot faster than the racey looking one's is a big +.My Tarn bitch was also like this.Very broad and actualy looked to heavy and muscular at time's.She was just under 23 inches ,and weighed 52lb,when she was race fit.Her sister was 54lb,and 23 inches. The pup i have at the minute isnt as bully as he was ,but the big head is still there ,and he will probibly fill out,to be pretty well built. He still look's to have bull in his make up.So hope this is a good thing. ...Billy...
