I am really not enjoying my job at the moment. Being stuck in an office isn't really me. I need to do something now I feel before I get stuck in a rut.

I've always been around dogs, and love to read stuff about what makes a dog tick.

I have been looking for a while now for a decent dog training class to go to. However, there seems to be very little to choose from.

It seems there is a bit of a market here which seems (for now at least untapped).

Of course I am always looking for oporunities to learn etc but along with my lack of enthusiasm for my current job felt that this could be a potential career.

What training is needed to become a dog/owner trainer?

What can I do myself to make me stand out from other people?

I'm just looking for idea's etc as I would love to do a job that I love and enjoy!

Thanks

Lots of reading here http://www.apdt.co.uk/

There are a multitude of courses you can take but there is currently no formal qualification required to set yourself up as a dog trainer in the UK. Obviously though people do look for proffessional qualifications when choosing a trainer, so you will need to consider the costs involved. APDT membership requires an assessment consisting of a written essay exam test followed by a practical test where you are observed teaching a class. The assessment is currently £120 followed by an annual membership fee of £65. APDT also provide foundation and advanced instructor training courses which I believe are around £1200 each!

What I would say though is that the dogs are the easy bit, probably 85% of dog training is about teaching the owners rather than the dogs, so you need excellent people skills if you intend to make a living from it.
