What was it?

We have to pay council registration fees here in Australia. This costs me $18.00 for each of my dogs. The $18.00 ($15.75 for pensioners) is the reduced rate. This fee is available if your dog is:

Desexed,

Microchipped

Over 10 years old

A working dog

Kept for breeding at a licensed premises

Dog registered and owner a current member with an appoved association (e.g. VCA)

Undergone obedience training with an approved organisation

The following dogs are $83.00

Dogs not included in the above

Declared Dangerous Dogs

Declared Menacing Dogs

Guard Dogs (non residential)

Our council is currently conducting house to house checks - in a city of 400,000, which should be interesting. Owners of unregistered dogs will receive an on the spot fine of $200 per dog.

I resent paying my registration. The council claims that my $36.00 will help to return my dogs to me should they get lost. What a lot of baloney. They are in a fully enclosed yard and do not wander the streets. They are microchipped. They are both VCA registered. They have both undergone obedience training at a local dog club. And one is over 10 years old and desexed. That's 5 out of 7 from their bloody list. In the event of them being lost, I will stand a greater chance of them being returned to me through their microchips than their council dog tags. I will be the one down at the local dog pound and hounding all the local vets in my search for them. I will never cost my council one cent. The people who will cost them money won't pay the registration, so whats the point

yes and they should make it so that it´s expensive enough to discourage idiots from having a dog!

But there again they cannot enfforce road tax/insurance so what´s the point?

Yep me too  I used to go to the post office for ours too. Dont know whether it would work or not now. It wasnt much to pay in those days was it?? and Yes Tesa - some people would always find a way around it.

The point is, it's a nice little earner. Do the sum's Max has cost me $200 in fee's. Beau is my third dog and I'll let the cat out of the bag, we have our name down for another puppy. Now over the lifetime of 4 dogs thats $800. If you can frighten enough of the honest responisble owners into paying their registration, in a city of 400,000... well you do the sums, and then mulitply it nationaly. It won't make a difference if you raise the fee's to discourge the idiots, because they won't pay the fee regardless of the price.

Had to laugh we I read that they were conducting the house to house search. They have allocated a month to do the entire city of Geelong and the outer regions (which is me), what a joke.

I have no objection to pay the council registration for my dogs, provided we get some benefit for our money; dog parks with poo bins ( I am not too keen on bringing bags home with me), by-law officer who makes sure no dogs are alowed to wander (which makes it difficult for me to walk with my dogs), and if a dog is behaving in an aggressive way there is some record who owns him etc.

Lida

Puppy! Are you going to tell us more? Where is she/he coming from from? Are they already born or when are they due?

Same as before Lida, still wanting to add a little girl to our clan, but she must wait until we are in the house. Beau is busting for someone to run and play with. Am hoping Colin's black girl Satia may have something around the right time for us, I like her.

Don't know Lida. I haven't spoken to Colin for a while. He was expecting her to come into season about now. Aren't counting our puppies before they hatch

Same here Lida, but the problem is I don't feel like we are getting benefit for money down this way. I just feel that it is responsible owners who are footing the bill for the irresponsible ones.

Hey this has reminded me of a funny story. When we first got Max - as he was from an animal shetler, he came desexed. I went into to register him with the council. I didn't have any paperwork with me to prove he was desexed, and the woman behind the counter wouldn't take my word for it. I said to her that I had Max in the car outside if she wanted to check for herself. She asked what looking at him was going to prove

not sure how i feel about reintroducing the dog license - idiots will always get dogs that they can't afford...and those of us on a middley income who have enough to comfortably provide for our animals but without a lot to spare, will just end up stretched financially

what i'd be more interested in is compulsary insurance - third party liability (so if someone elses dog injures mine i've got something to claim against) together with a registration scheme which matches all dogs to their people (or people to their dogs, i'm not fussy!) and maybe health insurance to stop treatable conditions resulting in a death sentence

the difference between this and dog license fees? I'd be getting something back for it, rather than just adding to the council's general coffers
