The mother of someone on another (non-dog) forum would like to find a rescue dog to adopt - but the local rescues (I think she's in the north of England) say they don't have any at the moment.

Really? I thought rescues were bursting at their seams, having to turn dogs away? Are they saying they don't have any because they just don't want to rehome any at this time of year? Have they had a good clear-out (no idea how they'd do that though) in preparation for the post-Xmas influx?

That's odd. I just did a quick Google and the Darlington Dogs Trust has 3 pages (of course she might not be near there but they can't be unique).

Alot of rescues will Not rehome between now and new year ......
Rescue Remedies based in Guildford and Gatwick have many breeds including sighthounds and rehome even Christmas day ...i have fostered for them and had 2 go to homes on new years eve, boxing day and spoken to prospective home on Christmas day ....
They rehome all over the country

Thanks both - I've fed that back to her, but I think they want somewhere where they can meet the dog first, and they haven't got a car at the moment so it would have to be bussable.

Depends where in the north she is, around Lancaster I know their are rescues that have dogs.

A lot of rescues don't rehome at Christmas.
For the next couple of months , they will have the puppies that were given as Christmas presents dumped on them.

Lurcher Link are full, no room at the inn so to speak. They are based in Halifax but rescue, foster and rehome all around the country.

Yes, I follow them and have seen their urgent requests for fosterers :-( This person is in Cleveland, but does want somewhere they can get to on public transport. She's found a few rescues with dogs now, but nothing that quite fits - small, middle-aged and calm & quiet. They're happy to wait till the right dog comes along.

I've often thought about our 'next dog'. But Jasper has limited us so much, and we should be into our 60s when he goes - I do wonder if fostering will be the way to go for us. We'd also have the option of becoming 'failed fosterers' if the right dog came along and we decided we didn't have any more bucket items to tick off the list.

And if we did have another dog, I can't decide whether to go down the route of thinking that as we now have a lot of experience of resource guarding, fear aggression, redirected aggression, separation anxiety and basically, deranged brain, we should give a home to another dog who needs understanding... or to insist on a dog we can cuddle on the sofa, remove pilfered food from, leave at day care/dog walkers, dress up in silly clothes, clip toenails, take to the vets without bothering to muzzle, change dressings on wounds because we've done it the hard way and now deserve an easy one!
