Hi I'm looking into this for Marley and wondering if anyone has any advice on it? Marley's anxiety has gotten worse and the vet has recommended nutri calm? But on reading about it I came across Dorwest with good reviews. I also looked at adaptil collars but I'm not sure which to buy.
Any help would be appreciated

I think I tried it with one of our dogs. Can’t remember how it worked out, so can’t be much help. I think I also tried Hilton Herbs Tranquility Powder. And also a liquid magnesium solution made for dogs. Low magnesium levels can cause anxiety, and it is used as a calmer for horses, though I give my pony magnesium as a matter of course, as it’s an important mineral, and, being water soluble, they excrete any excess. I think you have to build up gently, as too much can cause diarrhoea.

From what I've read, the Scullcap and Valerian seems to be more effective than the Adaptil, but I don't know if @DixieD 's recommendations are maybe better still.

When I looking for a 'calmer' for my pup for fireworks night, I was told that Adaptil collars will take quite some time to start working and for more quicker results the Adaptil travel spray would be better. But there is no reason why both Adaptil products could not be used in same time, one to get more 'instant' effect started until the collar will get into work for more continuous effect.
Only other thing I've used is CBD oil which has helped too.

Have you any idea of the cause of the anxiety? Is there any sort of trigger, eg., why it seems to have worsened. The supplements or Adaptil, which I think works on pheromones (?), may treat the symptoms of anxiety, but not the cause, so the dog continues to have it. . Fir example, as I said in an earlier post, people use magnesium as a calmer for horses, and it’s seen as that, and given now and then as such, when the horse’s anxiety gets too much. That’s treating rhe symptom. But, a lot of horses are deficient in magnesium, which is actually the cause.

So, for example, with our neurotic collie (this was the dog we tried the calmer on), we discovered through observation, he was constantly scanning the horizon for movement. He so felt the compulsion to do so that, anything that happened in his direct environment completely caught him by surprise, like a cyclist going past, as it came out the blue basically. I did lots of starts and stops with him, and, when he stopped, I asked him to “watch me”. This helped to break the “scanning” addiction. I also worked on Kathy Sdao’s observation that dogs associate events with the last emotion they associate with it, so I worked on associating walls with calm, rhythmic walking, originally up and down the most boring walk imaginable, and it did help. He was still neurotic, but we were able to work around it to a certain extent, and were able to put a routine in place that helped him cope.

I tried Skullcap & Valerian on Jasper, and it made no difference. But then his arousal levels tend to either be 'so chilled he's horizontal' to'OMG, the sky's falling in and we're all going to die'. As an alternative, have you considered CBD oil? I know Mad Murphy found it really helpful.

He is walking better on his own but the vet is recommending something to help him which I agreed he needs. He's getting IBS and colitis with it now so he really needs something. I need something I can use daily (for walks)
@JudyN Marley can be like jasper one minute chilled out the next anxious. Have thought of cbd oil I thought someone here had tried it but wasn't sure who. The only thing that bothers me is I don't want him sedated.

Oh, dear, it sounds very difficult for both you and Marley. Hooe you find a solution.

The dog we had was a bit of a puzzle. He was so bad, we allowed him to be a house/garden dog for a couple of years. I did mention this to the vet, as I was concerned about this course of action, and the vet was aware of how anxious Wolfie was. He had no concerns about us doing this. Wolfie was quiet as a mouse in the house, very chilled, would lie on the sofa and watch the world go by out the window. I began to wonder if he was agoraphobic. If the postie knocked, he was the one who didn’t bark! We did eventually work out a solution to get him out to a nice quiet area, where he could potter about. It is so difficult when you have an anxious dog, as you feel so bad for them. <3

It is a 'raw' oil which means that it is rather bitter tasting but my dogs don't mind it at all..if anything they rather like it. I put just one drop per dog on my finger for them to lick it off(one drop per day, per dog) and it seems to do the trick. Mine weigh about 7.5 & 9 kg. When you start giving oil...take it into account that it may take up to few weeks the oil to start working after which you may need to adjust the quantity to suit the dog or even the oil to have a effect in first place. I used the scullup and valerian tablets leading upto firework night for Floyd I was also advised by Dorwest herbs to give him the liquid plus the tabs for a few days before the fireworks started I have to say he was much calmer

Has he eaten or drunk today? I normally deal with these things the way I would if it was me - I wouldn't rush to the doctor if I had vomited once and was off my food but after a second day I might. That said, the weekend is starting so maybe a trip to day would be a lot less expensive than one tomorrow.

I used it for my older dog. It was useless. Didn’t make any difference at all. I’ve used nutri calm too. That was no good either. I wouldn’t waste money on the scullcap
