OH my god I am horrified I didn't think she had it in her o . Out this morning with Dotty and Duke for the usual walk and run Duke suddenly ran off faster than I have ever seen him go, with Dotty in hot pursuit. I soon to my horror, discovered they were chasing a rabbit Poor little thing didn't stand a chance before they were on it Duke knew exactly what he was doing! :devil: :devil:. Dotty has never, until now killed anything o , and I hoped she never would. Now my sweet inocent little girl that was o is a killing machine :sweating: . Some may think I'm being stupid but I don't like the thought of my babies killing small furries. I just had to share this cos I'm just so stunned . I can almost hear some people saying 'for god sake they're whippets what do you expect? But It doesn't mean I have to like it. I hope they are not going to make this a regular thing. I suppose its a part of owning whippets I am just going to have to learn to live with, but I'm not going to like it! :sweating: :unsure:

As you say, it is what whippets are bred to do. Apart from being more selective where you walk or let them run free it is just something you have to come to terms with. If it is any consolation whippets usually manage a quick kill so the 'furry' will not really suffer.

I know thats what I thought once they got a taste for blood thats it. I am just going to have to learn to live with it. I think I was just sooo shocked, the worse thing was hearing the rabbit scream! and my OH going to try to get the dogs off it but I stopped him because I knew the kindest thing to do was to let them finish the job. I suppose in a way thank god Duke did know what he was doing because it did seem to be over quite quickly :sweating: . I think if there is a next time (hopefully not but I have a suspiscion this is just the beginning) I'm gonna have to just walk off and leave them to it because I can't stand to hear an animal in pain. On the funny side, some walkers up ahead must have thought I was a mad woman when I was screaming and shouting at them to leave it alone (w00t) :teehee: :wacko: xx

They don't get a taste for blood as such , they chase and kill because it is in their nature. They are a hunting dog after all. The chase is what gets them going, catching is the reward. If you don't want them to hunt you'll have to find a place without any rabbits.

If you have whippets, that's what they do, not all but most. )

if you really don't want it to happen again I guess you could try muzzles, then you might feel better about it.

I wouldn't Muzzle them if i was you just incase they go out of sight and get caught up on something.

Or have another dog attack them and then cant defend themselves.

But this is just my thought's. you must decide what you want to do.

This is actually the bit I dread. My little whippet x is better at catching them than either of the whippets (and they are no slouches) and so far, they have all dispatched them cleanly but I know there will be a time when I shall have to do it. :x

well done to them both its amazing to watch whippets do what they were made for lol best thing anyone who takes their dogs off lead where there are likely to be rabbits is to learn how to dispatch one cleanly should the need ever arrise its better to be prepared than let the rabbit suffer :thumbsup:

Thanks for the feedback guys I'm glad I'm not the only one who is squeamish! I was thinking about a muzzle but I think what i'm going to try to do is avoid the areas I know small furries frequent. As far as finishing the job goes or dispatching (I assume this means the same) Duke did seem to do a very quick job of it, but yes I am dreading the day the honour will be passed to me. I know what to do but the thought is just horrible. I'm kind of hoping if it happens again I wont be near enough to hear anything :thumbsup: :sweating: x

Start and keep them on the lead, Its irresponsible and breaking the law to let them hunt on land you dont have written permision for :wacko: .........

I find your responce quite unhelpful. :angry: My dogs are pets, we were out walking on common land, we do not go onto private property and usually stick to parks and beaches we will, obviously, avoid this particular area and if this happens again be using a muzzle. For your information I am totally opposed to any kind of sport hunting which is why this post is in general whippets :thumbsup:

You weren't deliberately setting out to hunt the bunnies so don't feel guilty AT ALL :thumbsup: Instinct and 100+ years of breeding will always take over.

My Tina was just a soft daftie and never really seemed interested in rabbits on walks - she just wanted to run around in circles and play with other dogs....oh, and roll in anything smelly to drive Neil demented (w00t) Diva, on the other hand, was an ex-gamekeepers dog and she was terrible for hunting :unsure: If I was in an area where I knew there were rabbits I would keep her on the longline but in new areas she could tell quicker than I could if there were bunnies around. She caught & killed two myxied rabbits which I was pleased about as I didn't know how to humanely dispatch them but the day she chased and caught a rabbit that had strayed too far from it's hole was awful. The rabbit screamed but Diva did kill it in seconds thankfully. She also brought the rabbits back to us :wacko: We never ever scolded her for this behaviour as it was what she had spent her first 5 years trained to do - it was up to us to try to keep our eyes open and see the bunnies first!!! (w00t) In a way it was brilliant to see Diva working the warrens and hedgerows and fields and doing what the breed was bred for but we never deliberately encouraged her as I had rabbits as a youngster and absolutely adore them.

Neil and I are planning to get another whippie pup *or two* in the next few months so fingers crossed they don't become Bunny Hunters :wacko:
