This might explain why Jacob hit a brick wall yesterday doing his second trial at Bobs ......He still managed to finish and beat Taffy up for the lure though  ......I've never had a dog with a dropped muscle and as can be seen, he's managed to do 2 in one go .......Our greyhound vet has told me what to do (as we've been waiting for months for this to happen  ),but Simon said once the bruisings gone, he'll be much better as the one muscle has been slowly ripping since April ..... Any one any idea how long I should keep him off ?? ..... Simon seems to think he'd be fine with in a week .....Or is it just try him and see .....He dosn't seem to be feeling either leg  and is standing correctly and not mincing like he had been for the past few months .....

omg hannah that looks nasty  ,ive never seen this injury before either.

hope jacobs feeling more comfortable soon :huggles:

Poor old Jacob. On the other hand if its been slowly tearing for a long time, maybe its not such a bad thing that its finally happened properly. We've had to keep our's off from racing for months when we've had dropped muscles but Simon is the vet so he should know and the tears might have been worse with our dogs. They bruising makes them all look bad though so its hard to tell from a photo :(

Hope he is better soon Hannah.

Hi Hannah

My dog (Dandy's Gold) dropped his muscle a month ago after only having a one dog trial halfway around the bend and was bruised just like in your pic i could'nt believe it when i saw it so shows how easy they can do it. he was seen by our greyhound vet who said not to race him for at least 6mnths and no free running off the lead at the moment for at least three mnths so dont run Jacob for quite awhile yet, the vet said if rested properly he will be fine after as whippits stand a better chance of a full recovery more so than greyhounds, the tear on micky thankfull was only small, apparently it also depends if the tear is at the top of the muscle or the bottom its worse if its at the top, when walking Jacob let him pull on the lead as this helps recovery, and massage the muscle daily massaging from bottom to top not the other way round, the vet also gave him nandoral 0ne a day for a month to help the healing process, i hope this info is of some help and wish poor Jacob a full recovery.

Lily has a dropped muscle :( she hasn't raced for over a year now :( I did trial her but the bruising came back just like Jacobs :( although she hasn't ever shown that she's lame with it. I still let her free run :) she seems fine when she is free running, I think they know how much they can do. I would keep him off for longer than a week though

 Thanks for all of the advice ......Looks like he'll be off for at least the winter ......We'll book him into see Simon

 That looks nasty.

Guto has hurt a groin muscle, and has been lame for over a month (not sure how, as it happened when he was being mainly lead-walked due to a minor toe ligament problem). The temp. vet said it wasn't an actual tear, but that the muscle was inflamed and that it was taking a long time to heal  . We're giving it another couple of weeks to see if it improves before seeing our usual greyhound vet, but I'm assuming if we do he'll say to rest him for a month, just to be sure

Just to add, he is fine as he runs; but as soon as he stops the lameness is much worse as he walks, as if slowing down/stopping is what is aggravating the problem.

Poor Jacob! but before you know it the bruising will be gone, as others have said above I am sure that Simon is the best one to advise you but as you know Ross did both of his very badly when he was just over 4, we kept him off for nearly 2 years as every time we trialled him it happened again and we didnt want to hurt him, we have later found out that you have got to persevere as more fibres will tear - mainly scar tissue when they run again - so they will bruise up, we were advised to just leave them a week or so for the bruising to go and run them again and this has worked for us.

Ross started gradually running again over last winter and we persevered with this format (as it did bruise up a couple of times), even part way through the opens it bruised up again, but he had two weeks off and seemed to come back fine. Obviously the key to this being that he had already torn the muscles along time ago and that they had healed as best that they could - I guess the differing advice above may be for dogs who have dropped muscles for the first time?

:luck: with Jacob - Ross needs his running partner back soon!

Hi

Our Millie Any'Um had a droped muscle after coursing. She was retired from racing and coursing for about 2 years. She came back oin the track as a Vet but never raced to her full potential. She is now 9 years old and crabs (sideways) if after the lure.

If any dog has returned to their full potential after this type of injury I would be interested.

Ouch! Poor Jacob that looks nasty.

When Whizzy dropped both of his muscles (they went up) he had them sclerosed. We were told that he would have to be off the track for 5 months.

Hugs to the little man. :huggles:

My dog had a slight tear as a yearling, he was off the track for around 2 months. His leg has been fine since, he's won at the champs.

The first time this happened to us was with a good bend dog we had, it looked a lot like your dog. The vet could stitch the muscle up for us but the dog was 4 years old and won his fair share of races/champs, so he was retired from racing.

Hope your dog recover's quickly.

Our Bubble & Squeak tore both muscles, I'm guessing at about 4-5 years old, and Des Fegan told us to ice pack for 2 days, and then massage with iodised oil up to 21 days, and then hand slip, (not too long off to prevent overhealing and becoming too tight). We were then to run her at 28 days, and bring her back to fitness. She recovered enough to return to racing, and for some reason to start running out of her skin at 8 years old, and to do very well as a veteran - she never had a recurrence of the injury.

Thanks for all of your replies and emails  ......Jacob seems 100% in himself, and was hurtling around when we came back from shopping  .....I will use our ultra sound as advised  and carry on with the arnica and massage ......Its very strange but Jacob who is the biggest baby ever really isn't feeling either leg  ....Anyway thanks again, Hannah :)

Message to Ross .....Twit said he'll be back to partner him, even if he is on wheels and tied to the lure ;)

What is 'iodised oil' please, what does it do, and where do you buy it?
Carmel, it's a kind of rubbing linament that creates warmth. I got mine from the greyhound and whippet shop. I can bring you some next time we go racing if you like, as the bottle lasts for ages, and it's quite a big bottle. I've given some of mine to a couple of people, and still have half a bottle left. Let me know if you are coming to Gloucester at any time.
