On friday I noticed that the edges of my whippet's ears were very dry and flaky. The hair felt matted to the touch and sort of crumbled off when you rubbed it between your fingers. It didn't seem to be itchy though.

Yesterday afternoon I noticed that he now also has dry flaky skin on his back, with the majority of it towards the base of his tail. He has never had this problem before and has been on the same food (Burns)for a while now.

Has anyone else ever had this problem with their whippet or have any treatment suggestions?

Many thanks,

-jill

Try feeding him oily fish once or twice a week. They usually love pilchards, sardines and tuna!

One of my clients greyhounds had the same problem when fed on burns!! :- " They changed his diet and added the good old oily fish(sardines in tomato sauce) and hes fine now.

My Monty has been suffering from dry skin, he has a slightly bald patch in the midle of his back which we're hoping will recover slowly. He was very scurfy too.

A few weeks ago I started him on a course of ExmaRid which is basically an oil food supplement I got from Pets at Home which contains starflower oil, cod liver oil and some other vitamins. His scurf has definately reduced, we haven't changed his diet at all though.

One of mine had the same problem with her ears so much that the hair fell out and the ear edge became bald. You could rub the hair out between two fingers.

The vet told us it was a skin mite and gave us Malaseb shampoo to use twice a week. Within a couple of weeks it had cleared up and the hair grew back in. It comes back occasionally and a week of the Malaseb treatment always works

Check with your vet. They may take a 'scrape' of the fur and skin to check under a microscope to see if it is the mite.

I found Burns cured mine of dandruff in their fur, but that ear thing sounds a bit different. I didn't know that mites might be the cause of it.

One of mine got a blood blister on her ear and it swelled up like a samosa (alarming) (w00t) one vet suggested an op costing 700smakeroos (gulp!) (w00t) (w00t) another said leave it and the condition will resolve :)) :D , but the ear will just be crumpled forevermore :( . She was never going to be a show dog so I took the latter advice. She looks cute with a crumpled ear :huggles: .

Feed oily fish once a week, this includes mackeral, trout, salmon. Try evening primrose oil capsules which can be got from Dorwest herbs. Try brushing him daily, brushes can be found which massage to stimulate oil production. Minimise bathing as this strips the coat of all its natural oils. Look at diet in general as this can cause skin problems too. When you do bathe him there are shampoos designed for flaky/dry skin. I do use complete dog food but this is not their main food. The dry dog food I do use is Burns, it contains no cereals or artificial additives.

Many people on here feed barf. This is not my thing but there are many who swear by it.
