Hey!

Here are the latest pictures of my beloved boy Eppu (Dusilla Armani Suit) taken last weekend :) I think these pics turned out quite well and Eppu was a calm poser (well at times, but there were some interesting birds around  ).

He reminds me a huge amount of his grandfather, whom we bred, Multi Ch. Avalonia Wheatfield Waving (Nicholas). I think Nicholas has really stamped his type on first and second generation pups descended from him. We own a Nicholas son (Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik's Ardbeg Avalonia) who could also be a clone. I am clipping an old photo of Nicholas taken at a show just after we exported him to Finland when he was just over 2 years of age. I think the type is very, very similar to Eppu.

He is very similar indeed! I think I've seen that same picture before when I was going through Eppu's pedigree on Laila's www-site. I really like Nicholas colouring and structure as well. I am pretty fond of brindles at the moment (for obvious reasons :- " ).

I am still fairly "green" in my knowledge about whippet pedigrees and I try to look at photos and pedigrees to learn more about differences between certain dogs and family trees and what different breeders are looking for in a dog when they are planning litter. Really interesting stuff. I have to see if I can find a picture of Nicholas son (Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik's Ardbeg Avalonia) just out of curiosity :) .

I personally really like what Eppu looks like. He has masculinity in his appearance (for a skinny dog as my non-whippet friends would say (w00t) ) combined with elegance in the way he carries himself. I saw Laila last weekend when we took these pictures and I said that - as also a horse person - that I look for the same things in a dog as I would look for in a horse. The way they carry themselves as if they were thoroughbreads (Arabs for example). In don't know if that is a silly way to describe things :) .

I know it is difficult to define what it is the "thing" in a particular dog, but I think I couldn't have picked any lovelier dog from any litter. Eppu is just adorable :)

Very nice dogs, I would also add dont be seduced by any exagerations, which IMO I think is where the Whippet needs to differ from the Arab.

I don't think it is a silly way to describe things at all....in fact we do the same when looking for a good Whippet, after all they have to look right to the eye and movement and conformation is very important in the breed as that is exactly what they are bred to do (move & run!!) so I tend to liken them very much to the Thoroughbred as opposed to the Arab which is as Karen states exaggerated in places.

Eppu looks to me,to be a very lovely boy and shaping up nicely

I wish you all the very best with him  and look forward to seeing more pics as he develops. :)

Thanks for the encouragement everyone :)

I think it would be better to compare to English throroughbreads than Arabs... Arabs are wonderful but exaggarated in places like you said. There is certain showmanship in them which I like though.

We will attend our first big proper dog show here in Helsinki (Aptus Show) 20.-21.05. and this is our first time attending as a Junior (with only one Puppy Show behind us where we got an Honorary Prize)... I have to say I am quite nervous but I (we) still have some time to practise some more. I am sure there will be some tough competition, but we will take this as just as an experience to learn more and hopefully the judge Rafael de Santiago (Puerto Rico) will like Eppu :) It is going to be very exciting!!!! I will let you know how it goes and keep you up-to-date with all our latest developments.

Do not be nervous Susanne, you have to go into the ring feeling confident! Eppu is a beautiful dog, well deserving to be noticed by the judge. Best of Luck! :luck:

Thanks for posting the lovely pics of Eppu Susanne  .

Best of luck with Eppu in the Aptus Show :luck: . I'll be sitting on the ringside with my fingers crossed :) .

Thank you Lanny :) . Nicholas is one of my absolute favorites here in Finland, and I feel fortunate to own one of his puppies, Sonya, the dam of Eppu.

Thanks Lida! I will to try to keep my cool and be confident 8) and it will be nice to see also Laila there supporting us :)

Glad other people compare tp horses too! thought it was just me! Im new to the breed too and ive always had horses since i was small so i automatically find myself using the eye i used for a horse! ( if that makes sense!) and i would liken a whippet to a TB too, not an Arab who are very exaggerated IMO :D

There are a couple of decent photos of Erik on his page on our website -- http://www.geocities.com/avaloniawhippets/

We have used Erik with some exciting results recently with a lovely litter in 2005 out of Edith -- Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Wispa Jesta (Eng.Ch. Nevedith Justa Jesta x Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Wotta Wispa) out of which we kept both a dog and a bitch, and more recently his litter of 10 noted elsewhere on the k9 community site, out of Eng.Cdn.Ch. Nevedith Ceefa Ceely. It has been particularly interesting to see the breakdown of fawns and brindles in that litter... We are already planning to breed Erik to Int.Belg.Cdn.Ch. Avalonia Macallan on her next season. Tess is going to be 6 this year and while she had a litter in Europe for Bart Scheerens at Boxing Helena's, we have not yet had a litter out of her. Erik seems to be just the ticket. We are hoping for lots of brindles, hopefully including some more red brindles like Dan, pictured here from the Edith litter.

Dan is really lovely Lanny :D and I checked out your www-page to see picture of Fin.Swed.Cdn.Ch. Scheik's Ardbeg Avalonia and I really like him as well. Really nice head and expression. Reminded me of Eppu. I hope you are going to have a cracking litter with Tess! Best of luck with that and I hope you get a lot of wonderful brindle pups (w00t) .

I don't think that's silly at all :) . I also like the metaphor of thoroughbread horses  . Here's an earlier post by me (I remembered I've written something about thoroughbreads before :b ):

"I think it is just a perfect breed: lovely sweet temperament, beautiful to look at, it has elegance and style, it is not too big or not too small, and it has a short shiny satiny coat which comes in all colors. They somehow resemble small thoroughbred horses." (The question was: What Made You Chose A Whippet?, why is a whippet the breed for you) http://www.k9community.co.uk/forums/index....t=15&p=123171

Thanks Susanne :) . That's a lovely thing to say :huggles: . I'm glad you are happy with how Eppu turned out to be  .

The puppies have now turned 9 months. So they have already become Juniors :) .

This is the latest pic taken today of Suvi (Dusilla Avenue Fashions):
