dark-more black than brown- accumulation of wax in ear-occasional ear shaking.....

not smelly- so no infection......

?????

looked on net-could be mites?

any helpful advice please ?

do they look like this if so ther harvest mites as blue had them and we got told to treat them with dog shampoo so we did and it cleared up in no time :thumbsup:

You cant really see ear mites...just the dirty looking wax you are describing could definitely be them. My mothers spaniel used to suffer regularly from them.

I would have a visit to the vet for some treatment...and the ears may need a clean out too. It is usually in the form of drops...the treatment.

I was hoping to sort it myself-

cleaned the ear with iodine solution, sprinkled with flowers of sulphur, tried tea tree oil last night-I'll give it another few days-

then to the vet I will go :blink:

if you go to the vet he'll give you some canaural and you have to keep treating it as they can be beggars to get rid of so keep dosing with it.otherwise get some flea spray like formula and put some on the inside of the ear flaps but not down into the ear itself.if the black stuff in the ear is grainy to the touch when you press it between your finger and thumb(bit like coffee grounds) its usually mites if its soft and smooth its usually wax and some dogs just produce a lot of wax

we used to use flowers of sulphur for our rabbits ears years ago when they got canker

Get some Thorn-It powder, it's brilliant stuff for clearing up ear mites & other ear related problems. Drops tend to keep the ear moist & warm so I think it just encourages infections. Thorn it powder dries everything up & really does work.

My bedlington had a few ear infections when we got him & for a year or so I shoved drops down at regular intervals but it never really cleared up.

My friend has poodles & told me about Thorn it. I used it on Rafferty & he hasn't had a problem with his ears since....6 years.

I use the powder when I pluck his ears & it keeps them lovely & clean & infection free.

I think you can get it off the internet but if you can't find it then let me know & I'll root out the tel no if you want it.

If you go to the vet you should be able to buy a product called Sancerum (made by Schering-Plough Animal Health) - it's an ear cleaner which does a bit more by sorting out the wax/mite problem too :thumbsup:

You don't need to see the vet to obtain this as it's categorised as a P product, which you can buy over the counter.

Don't get fobbed off with the ordinary ear cleaning products - they don't do enough, and the antibiotic drops can be pricey and also quite invasive to the delicate ear
