can anyone help ?

Ella, 14 weeks, steals stones, lumps of dry soil, twigs etc, now does she do it for the chase, will she really eat a stone or break a tooth on them.

Should we train her to 'drop it' for a swap for a bit of cheese or will that just encourage her to go off and find some more to give us for a treat in return.

Should we just swap it for a toy, and do they grow out of it ?

What's the best way to deal with her nipping us, since she hasn't got another dog on whose ears to chew, we thought if we put her on her own cushion on the floor and stop playing for a bit she might get the hint that it's not polite !

She is really fun especially when she has one of her maddies and loves everyone in the park

When ours was a pup, we used to say "Ouch" quite sharply whenever he nipped us and moved away from him, and "that's lovely" when he licked instead. He learned quite quickly which we preferred - and we still say "that's lovely" when he gets into one of his licky moods!

Have you got a photo of her sitting on her cushion? I'd love to see that!

Hi.,

Floyd, who is roughly the same age, has been doing the same, picking up stones, manky wood, soil, flowers etc. I also get worried that he make choke or damage is teeth. Will he grow out of it and any tips on how to control it?

Thanks

Lise

Heres another picture of our bundle of joy getting cuddles.

PS he does have two ears BTW!

Ours drove me round the bend with this - when I first got him I'd planted up a few plum trees (which die from silverleaf if damaged in winter) and he'd play tug of war with them. I'm happy to say he grew out of it very quickly, and dedicated himself to making a pile of treasure (teasel heads, crisp packets and yoghourt pots) in a corner of the garden.

His first ambition in life was to get close enough to the cat's litter tray to eat it (having tried the odd small morcel that came in on her feet). He achieved this goal fairly soon, and has never been known to touch the stuff again. :x

Nipping. The little  was a right pain, he wouldn't really nip intentionally but he would steal gloves off your hands while out walking, usually taking a little bit of finger with it >_< Again he grew out of it fairly soon. I lost a fair few gloves that winter too :- "

Remind me, why do I want another one?

Yep us too Elizabeth and Lise..... been out this afternoon and we have a young apple tree (2 years old) and have over a dozen lovely little apples on and Im so pleased as it only produced about 4 last year (it was planted for my birthday) :) anyway they have almost stripped the lower branches of leaves and apples - little beggars. (w00t) (w00t)

forgot to add I have a lovely stone trough just across from the back door with rockery plants etc and top covered with small pebbles and shingle - Oscars favourite trick is running around the garden with my little stones and bringing them in all over the house. (w00t)

I think it must be a whippet thing! Our garden, AND my dads when we go up and visit looks exactly like the photo! (w00t) all caused by Holly! she seems to find sticks and twigs everywhere, has a mad dash around the garden with it and then chews it into a million pieces!........and then goes to find another!

Hi Julie,

Honey, Ellas sister is just the same, She no longer nips we just say no and stop that game and give her something else to chew on, as soon as she stops we praise her, a nice cool carrot will help her with her teething.

When she picks up stones etc i just say no and as soon as she walks on, i praise her again, i know its is easier on lead, if you have her free running in the garden its more difficult to stop them or catch them to take it out!!!lol

At this age they are so inqisitive about everything, and like a child everything is explored by their mouth :x

Perhaps if you have her on a lead in the garden, until she is a little older, and just let her have a blast round the house, or put tempory fencing so she has a fairly clear area to play in, with plenty of interesting toys, chews and stuff to play with.

The good thing is its just a phase it will pass!! a couple of my others were like this and they dont do it anymore, they have found much more interesting things like chewing up people's slippers and undies, tissues........

Good luck with Ella,

Yup! Albie's the same!! I've even caught him pulling weeds up! (But then that's all that grows in my garden at the moment!! :b ) When I get around to "sorting" the garden, the true gardener's bit is going to be at the front where the little  can't get at it!! In the back are going to be large shrubs and trees that can take being eaten, run round and on, and pee'd on!!

LOL !! I dont think it was a Whippet at all ! Looks more like youve had a mini tornado (w00t) and youre just blamimg it on that`` poor defenceless whippet ` ;)

Now you see ,if you had 2 pups they would have been so busy playing with each other that they would leave your trees alone o:)

Hi julie, hows you, so ella steals stones does she, well snap, so does jill, i try and catch her doing it then just say no, her ears go back she knows its wrong but soon as i turn my back she's at it again, they will grow out of it, we havent had any bother with nipping, bit im sure she will grow out of that to, its 11 pm we have just got back from a short stroll along with my other dog sally, a golden retriever, boy does jill give her some stick, but sally lets her get away with murder, just put jill to bed in her cage, she's fast asleep now till morning, she never budges, never wets her bed, and first thing in the morning, when i let her out, she,s down them stairs like the clappers and sits at the back door till i let her out, then in she comes for breakfast, i really cant fault her, she,s only 14 weeks

good luck with Ella

keith and ruth

Hi Keith and Ruth,

Ella went to the beach today met loads of people, didn't think much of the sea, ran up + down the sand dunes and has been zonked out ever since.

She had tripe for the 1st time today, was gassing us just before so OH took her in the garden for toilet, cheeky little madam just came straight back in and did it on the kitchen floor :- "

trouble is when she had 5 days of diarrhoea we had to leave cage doors open, for obvious reasons :x last night she didn't wet or poo, so fingers crossed for tonight.

Funny, she has yet to do a wee or other while we've been out with her, think she saves it all up for home :- "

have you mastered the posting of photos yet, love to see how Jill is growing, I got 1 pic posted but don't know how :b

Albie was like that to start with. It seems to take a while for the penny to drop that you can actually do your business on walks!

Eating stones, digging, eating the trees, eating nasty smelly stuff yes all sounds familiar to me

I think you have a very normal whippet there, agree with everyone about the nipping take you hands away and ignore her for a minute put your hands back and keep doing it until she realises that it's a no no, I usually say no biting in a firm voice, Spry still does it sometimes but i think they tend to grow out of it, mine did anyway.

Hope all goes well with it

I haven't had a whippet pup for nine years and had forgotten about all these destructive things they get up to as pups. (w00t) Stanley wasn't so bad, he just dug up carpets and hung on to trouser legs. He was a breeze in comparison. o:)

Thanks for reminding me now I've just decided to get a whippet pup.

Still...this is a bit of a refresher course for me...so it does make useful reading :)

Oh Nicola - Hooray 8) how nice for you. 20 Questions now - whose puppies, born yet or not?, Where in the country, what colour, how old?? what breeding, when??
