We were all talking about English Bull Terriers today at college as it is one girls aspiration to breed them once she has passed this course. I know virtually nothing on this breed and was wondering if any one knows any thing about them?

not for the inexperienced dog owner, got a bad rep, bags of energy, fiesty, keep you on your toes!

but then- amazingly loyal loving dogs if raised and trained and bred properly are great dogs! i want one, but want to wait till ive experienced more. I have been around dogs all my life, rescues, and peds. A few have had serious probs, including dominance and agression probs, and i dont feel 100% ready for bt yet!

The last bt i met was 9 year old bitch called molly, who was very passive and sweet.

If your friend wants to breed she needs excellent contacts and help, i wouldnt advise starting out breeding bull terriers personally.

I hope in 5 years time i'll be the proud owner of one myself, (preferably a white and red bitch :huggles: ) x

Add to that quite a few genetic health problems, a propensity for destructiveness (and consequently they must quite often be taken in for surgery to remove foreign objects from their intestines) and hyperactivity ("spinning" bull terriers is apparently a well-known problem in some lines), and yes - the EBT is certainly not for everyone.

I knew of a couple who had an EBT who TWICE ripped the entire interior of their car to shreds.

The Norwegian Bull Terrier Association strongly advices against keeping an EBT together with another dog of the same sex - probably the main reason why I would not consider the breed for myself.

They are wonderful, though...

my sister had one, he lived with us for a while when she re-located.

Wayne hated him, said he didn't know which end looked ugliest

I loved him, he was sweet and dopey and a pit like a piglet

BUT . . .

he had some mental problems, spinning was one of them! he could be left with a bag of dog food without eating it but if there were any tins of food he would chew them up, he was a terrible fly watcher and would spend as long as you would let him staring at shadows in the corner :(

he was fine for a few years when he was living just with my sister while she was at kennels, but when she moved into a 'proper' house and normal family life, he could not cope at all, he became highly stressed, his habits got so bad that the vet said that even specialist training wouldn't help, the only way for the dog to cope would to move to a very quiet location or go on medication.

my sister had worked in gun dog training and boarding kennels for years and was far from inexperienced but even she couldn't help him

he ended up having to be re-homed with someone who lived out in the sticks alone - it broke my sister's heart :(

I would never get a bull terrier - they are no way near as good as whippets and iggies :huggles:

Lisa (Whippynit) has got an EBT i believe.

All in all the breeds quite a worrying one then? i was just wondering about them as I havent really heard anything about them. I think ill have a quiet word with my friend as she hasn't even had a dog in her family so she would def be thrown in at the deep end!

Hello, yes as Jo said we have an EBT and i am going to jump to his defence abit here - yes they do have abit of a bad repution but they are not all nutters/riddled with skin complaints/destructive/ etc etc.

We had Diesel admittley before we discovered whips and if we'd found the whips first then i dont think we would of had him as i am totally in love with the whippet 'breed' whereas i love our EBT Diesel not nessicerely the breed if that makes sense ;) He was my OH choice of dog as he has always wanted one so he is his dog really. Anyway abit more about him - yes you do have to keep on top of them as he can be stubborn pig at times and that along with the fact that he is the greediest dog ive ever known and eats his dinner in 3 seconds flat like hes never been fed are the two most things that irritates me about him! ( we do sometimes have a love/hate relationship!) but he is NEVER destructive, the whips are much worse at stealing things than him! he is the most friendliest dog towards others and is so gentle with the whips , people probaly think he would be rough around them but its the other way round! The whips run circles around him, jump all over him and bite him ( in a playful way of course!)

so thats the general summary of my experience with a EBT, no they not for everyone but then again whippets arent either! Give me a whippet anytime over a EBT i agree and i dont think EBT are a great first dog - you do have to be strict at times but they can make loyal, fun pets and i wouldnt change ours now.

I just wondered, does this girl have any knowledge of EBT at all, I mean, does her family own them or owned them in the past, or anything?

Someone I used to work with has EBTs and I remember her telling me what they can be like to live with. She loves hers but is realistic about their breed traits and in general they certainly don't come across as a beginner's dog (no disrespect intended, to those who own and love EBTs, obviously :huggles: )

heres a pic showing how gentle and sweet he can be, Willow was a pup then and she LOVES her brother Diesel! :huggles:

Thank you . :) If your friend is a kind of daddys girl who just wants one on a whim and her family have never had dogs then i would advise against having one! like i said they not really ideal 1st dog, tell your friend to go along to some dog shows and speak to EBT people there for advice or ring a EBT breed club who should only be to happy to help and if shes serious and still sure then then go for it but dont just go out and buy one without speaking to people for advice and tales of their experineces with living with one, Or at least buy a book and read up on them.

oh yeah and get her parents to speak to people that own the breed too so they fully know what they are like! No good them not being aware of what they are taking on - afterall they will be living with it too so they need to be committed :thumbsup:but then thats the same as they should be towards any breed of dog coming into the family really :)
