Any tips on how you deal with a turbo charged whippet when she comes into season? Rita who is 9 months old, has today come in to season, and I am wondering what people do in terms of exercising... She is lively even by whippet standards. I live in Wimbledon, so plenty of space to run but no chance of avoiding other dogs. She is used to running off lead at least once a day, so she might start climbing the walls - any suggestions would be welcome. I agreed with the vet to let her have one season before being speyed...

Keep her on the lead!

I would if you're able put her in the car and drive her to a quiet area and walk her on the lead, late at night is good to save winding up all the local boys

But you never know how the hormones may affect a normally obediant girl, she could just take off in her search for lurve!

Lots of brain games in the house...hide the biscuits and ball throwing around...my house is tiny and I manage and if you let her in the garden keep a very close eye at all times, for her going off and boys coming calling

Nearly forgot...she's a stunner by the way

Oh Clair that's nice sensible advice..........from you

Rita's a very pretty young lady

She very stunning

I always keep Abbee in the garden, when she is in season, under close supervision, and never left alone. She can run about in the garden, even though its a small garden.I won't take her out anywhere as i do not want to take any risk or any dog coming near her, even its its quiet,as there bound to be males dogs around somewhere  I have males dog too and she is kept well away and secure from them too

good advice from meddling (makes a change :- " )

your girlie is beautiful

no advice from me - but what a gorgeous girl!

We've got a bitch in season at the moment and im doing what we always do.

She's still aloud to go off her lead on walks. Big open areas where i can see who's around.

However, she is not in the receptive time of her season and is living normally with an entire dog at the moment. She wouldn't have any inclination to run off and find a mate at this time.

During the time she's ready to be mated, she'll still go on normal walks but will be kept on the lead. This period of time does not last long.

I personally think it unfair and unnecessary not to take a bitch out for a walk for 3 weeks.

Well i am lucky, when sasha was in season i put her in my car and went up the moors for the 3 weeks.Didnt see a soul, but where i live we have large fields just a minutes walk away where i walk the greyhounds.A mate of mine would never walk his bitch and she went mad being stuck in doors and only allowed in her back garden.Till i came up with an idea.Near us we have a secondary school with an enclosed tennis court, everyone played football and all sorts when the school was closed at night.See someone had made a hole in the fencing, big enough to enter the court. So in the evening he took his bitch there.Of course making sure he cleaned up after her.I am not saying do an illegal act but maybe theres such an area similar to this near you.Other idea is put a pair of nickers on her lol this is true me old granny did this to my grandads bitch greyhound whilst she was in season and me grandad was at work.

I'm glad you asked this question, it is something I am going to have to cope with soon! What a beautiful girl Rita is, you'll have a fun time defending her virtue

how is your gorgeous girl bred please? she has a look of one of my girls and i was wondering if they are related...

Thanks for all the advice and compliments - I've have attached another pic of her. She came from Serena, her dad is Dexter (Courthilll Come Fly with Me) and her mum is Lana (Starswift Sunrise).

The comment about 'normally obedient' made me laugh tho, Rita has been called many things, but never that!

she is a very beautiful girl...

I live on a farm thats all fenced in so I am lucky there. though it seems that you have gotten some wonderful advice here already! :D

Love the other photo, she a stunner

I must quote the reason why we keep our bitch in the garden when in season,we took her to a very quiet area, were anyone hardly goes, and all of a sudden a big black dog appeared from nowhere (w00t) and would not leave her alone, she was growling and getting very stress, luckily the owner appeared, and says he normally does'nt go off like that, but because he smelt a bitch,he was gone!! i sort of felt guilty as he was not his fault, luckily the owner was ok about it :sweating: and that why its put me off taking her anywhere.

For me, even if I didn't know of anywhere safe to free run one of the girls when in season, I would make sure that they got lengthy road walks twice daily.

I think I would be one unpopular person if they were confined to the garden only for the duration of their season

Theres quite a few dogs were i live as i live in a street,so it can make things differcult, believe me i hate doing this,as they need their daily execise, but it only for three weeks every nine months.i would be more unpopular taking her out and causing problems for the males around here.

Please don't try and make me feel bad about this.We all have different ways of dealing with this.

I'm not trying to make you feel bad about it; just saying what I do with a bitch in season and what I would recommend to the original poster.

However, I can't remember the last time I saw a stray dog so I doubt when doing road work that you would come into contact with a loose dog.
