Hi A friend of mines bitch had a litter of 8 pups on saturday night. All pups and mother doing well until the second day the last born and the smallest of the litter has stopped suckling and is getting weak .My friend is having to hand rear this little one but its just getting weaker. She took it to the vets today and was told it could be Fading puppy Syndrome and could lose the whole litter from it....I was told a drop of brandy on the tongue works and brings the pups back...any advice would be greatfully recieved ... many thanks sarah

No advice, but fingers crossed for the pup and the rest of the litter :luck:

I have frequently used Brandy or any other stron liquer to hand to make a pup gasp, when it appears to be fading. When doing so, you can hear if there is anyhting on the chest of the pup i.e. rattling. If so, give the pup a vigerous shake to loosen the mucous and proceed to keep it warm, by whatever means and attempt to get nourishment into the pup. I have spent may a sleepless night with a pup down my front and feeding it every thirty minutes, through a dropper or syringe! Very often, if you can get it past 36 hours, they begin to pick up. With genuine Fading Puppy Syndrome, No matter what you do, unfortunately, they won't survive! But, I say, give it a go! Let's face it, you've got nothing to lose, and quite possibly a lot to gain! Good Luck! :luck:

sorry havenrt got any advice but preying the litter is ok and survives. :luck:

 gets my vote too. There's also a probiotic powder called professional made by protexin which can help. My vet recommends dipping a clean finger in plain yogurt then coating it in a little of the powder and wiping it inside pups mouth prior to suckling. You don't need lots and it'll go some way in colonising the gut with good bacteria.
Thank you again for all your help. Was on the phone last night too her and she has ordered some puppy stim also nutri drops .So fingers crossed
