My Goldie ran after a pheasant once - she is the best behaved walker, always at my side apart from when I allow her to run ahead - this day though nothing stopped her.

Thats the thing with any animal - they can be unpredictable, the ONLY sure way of controlling any animal is by restraining it with some kind of lead...

Just remembered a little 'story' which goes with this topic.

I was out lamping a couple of years ago with a mate, his uncle was ill and sat in the car for us to walk the fields. At this time we didnt have permisson.

So out we go, next thing the farmer comea on his quad, shiit! Starts giving us the verbals and getting pretty irate. We were apologetic and waiting for inevitable police to arrive. BUT this farmer is threatening us, hes going to shoot us etc and says gun is in the truck.

So this old man, my mates ill uncle gets out the car in his slippers and tries to calm the farmer down. Hes having none of it.

So his uncle says 'look, ive been coming here for years and ive always been courtious and respectfull. Have you every had a problem with rabbits....reply No....have you ever had a problem with worrying your livestock....answer NO....have you ever had a problem with you gates or fences.....answer No......

'well' he said, 'ive got 6 dogs, hes got 2 and hes got 2. We will be here 7 days a week at 12 oclock, 1 oclock, 2, 3 and 4 oclock, ill cut all your fences, open all your gates and chase all your sheep"

'Right, i see' said the farmer 'come see me tomorrow for permission'.

we cant tar all the farmers the same thow can we? like ive said before until i get a problem with one i cant say anythink bad about them, but thats not to say theres a few loopy ones out there so be safe, i once got invited into a farmhouse for a milk coffee by the farmers daughter at midnight but thats another story for another day lol.

bet you do lol i got the feeling she was just giving her dad a bad time, thinking about it it was nearly 25 yrs ago wow time flys, her dad had land so stayed intouch and had a laugh, nice coffee thow

quite the opposite lurcherman. i feel most farmers dont mind you on their land. if you obide by the 'countryside code'. i have found over the years that the 'dog man/lurcher man' out on a night for a few bunnies isnt a problem to him. nor is the ferreters. getting permission is one thing but when most have 'caught' me they usually dont mind that much.

i was out today on a bit of land and the farmer came over and watched the dog work for a bit :sweating: . wouldnt give me permission >_< but didnt care too much at what i was doing.

looks like your having fun and thats always a good thing, i dont do as much as you but always enjoy a mooch on my own and two dogs, how old is your dog blue? mine are both 11 next time round so dont do much with them now,

Ive been doing a lot in the past couple of weeks due to invites out and the fact my wife is away for a few days so been ouy every day and night with the exeption of last night. Just back from a few hours on the lure and Out tonight on a new bit of permission and out tomorrow ferreting it. Away on friday for a days ratting, just got the smoker running.

Been super busy the past week but making the most of the time on my own lol.

My blue whippet is 14-16 month old. Not sure exactly (unless i get the calendar out). Keen as mustard and a great ferreting dog. 19.5"tts.

My fawn lurcher is 8 1/2 months old. Saluki/grey/whippet x collie/grey/whippet. 22.5"tts.

Yes. They have to try sifficiently to stop the dog, get the owner or give it enough chance to stop. Not just see the dog in the field and shoot it!

I tell you what. Any farmer thinks he can threaten to shoot my dogs for no reason as the OP said, will have a nightmare of a time. Every gate will be opened, every padlock will be superglued and EVERY fence would be cut.

The farmers are a law unto them selves. Think they can do what they want. Gamekeepers too! I read an interesting article wrote by a top pro-fieldsports lawyer his name is clive rees.

He says that farmers/gamekeepers HAVE NO RIGHT to block in your vehicle, take anything off you or even restrain you. All they can do is phone the police.

YET stories are heard about gamekeepers blocking in vehicles of people walking their dog and accusing them of poaching.

If you have a running dog then EVERYBODY is againt you. Passers by see the lamp and phone the police, they see you walking down the street with a lurcher and a backpack....and they phone the police. The ARSEpca have done a damn good job at making fieldsports look like a crime and everybody who keeps whippets/lurchers is a poacher. If you own a sighthound and support the ARSEpca then you need to shake your head. Millions of pounds were spent last year on anti fieldsports campaigns by the ARSEpca, yet they are putting down healthy dogs because they cant afford to keep them.

This country is putty in the anti fieldports organisations hands.

I once got told when i was stopped. "If you have a lurcher then your a poacher"

Typical of the mindset. And most police do not know the laws regarding hunting. They are far too complicated.

Best thing i ever said, when gaining permission. The farmer said 'i dont like people running their lurchers'......

'I dont run lurchers' i replied 'i run whippets'.

I think that pheasants are considered livestock when they are young and penned in - once they are let loose, they are no longer livestock and are classed the same as wildlife. Sure i've read that somewhere, can't remeber where though unfortunately...
