Hey all… I have a little problem with the little kid…. His name is Chico, 4 months old German Shepard. Thank god he’s in perfect health but for some reason he’s afraid of getting up the stairs… I used to carry him up cause I live on 2nd floor, but he’s getting bigger & heavier … I have been trying for a long time to convince him to go up by himself but its not working at all…

I really need some advice… I have tried everything

i had exactly the same problem with my borzois who seemed almost terrified of stairs and couldnt work out how to do them!

do you know anyone with a little dog who could show your dog the way by running ahead?

make it fun and turn it into a game is an idea - and also tempting with tasty foods when your dog is hungry is a good way - they love liver cake as it smells so good - its made with liver and garlic - irrisistable and it takes his mind off something which is a huge worry to him!!

lots of treats for a little work is the basis for any dog training.

take it one step at a time as the saying goes - sorry!

Hi and welcome to K9!

I had the same thing years ago with one of my GSDs

It took time, but I gave her the confidence by standing her on the bottom stair (sideways on) and then placing her front feet one by one onto the next step. Once they were firmly in place I lifted her back end up to join the front and made a big, big fuss of her

She gradually got the message that it was a very rewarding thing to do and started to jump her own back end up until she did it all by herself and the penny dropped :thumbsup:

After that there was no stopping her (w00t)

PS My whippet, Jinny, didn't 'do' stairs for quite a long time so I carried her up and down them. One day I heard her coming down on her own - no problem! Guess she got fed up waiting for the lift to arrive :teehee: :lol:

I do not teach mine to go up stairs anymore (but they some how learn) only because I dont want them upstairs. When I did I done a similar thing to jinnyfizz. :luck:

Last night we did 4 steps!!... He loves carrots & i am using little pieces as rewards..

Hopefully we will get over with this problem with time... Ill try to post some pictures soon... thanks again...
