Hello,

I have a lovely whippet who has rather a feathery tail! I would like to have a go at showing her in 2010 and am wondering what I can do to enhance her tail outline!! I know that a feathery tail is not desirable in a whippet particularly in the show ring - any advice would be very welcome.

I myself use some cheap electrical clipper from argos, cost about a tenner.

yes either clippets or just scissors .you better start practising lol i also do the legs around the top of tail

Thanks I will have a look in Argos, any tips on usage, is it ok to trim all the tail? I am new to all this and want to do the right thing!

look for WHAL, I know that they also do a professional dog groomer's range, but no need for anything fancy.

I normally end up doing the whole length of the tail (underneath) as I try to make it even :unsure: and yeah, also trim the ''trousers'' a bit too.

Practice before hand as you might not make such a good job of it to begin with and it's always more difficult on a 'fresh' tail with longer hair. You might be best using scissors to do it initially - just hold the tail out horizontally and trim off the excess hair underneath. Some of mine i have to trim a bit but i have one, Rocco who has such a lovely fine coat that there is not any excess hair to trim at all and i've never had to do it. At the moment im not having to trim our pup either.

It's actually easier to do it regularly and have little tidy-ups rather than one massive hair cut! If you have a go now, any disasters will have grown back by next year - im sure you'll be fine though.

Particularly when you first try, always trim in the direction the hair falls ie from the base of the tail to the tip.

This way gives a better look & I have never used clippers as it takes too much off giving the tail a rats tail look instead of a more natural look. Admittedly i used to trim dogs for a living so I know what i'm doing.

As with Jok, I have a bitch who will be 12 in Feb & I have never trimmed her tail, some have tail hair which simply doesn't grow.
