Hi Everyone :thumbsup:

Hope some one out there can't help us on what to do with our 2 boy's Ron and Reg when fireworks go off

I know most of you might have got the same problem :thumbsup:

The thing is I got some herbal tablets from a company called Dorwest called Scullcap & Valerian tablets, which are mean't to carm them down, but they don't seem to be working

We would be very grateful for some good advice please !!!!!!!!!

Skullcap and Valerian need to be administered starting about a week before the firework season starts. They can have 1-2 tablets per 5kg of weight. As a more immediate dose for instant effect try Valerian Compound again from Dorwest Herbs.

Also close all curtains and turn on the tv or music as a background noise. Most importantly take no notice if they complain. They soon get the message.

try a d.a.b. plug in from your local vets. cassie (conway lady) really freaked out with the fireworks, but you plug it in a week before and it does calm them down.

we have fireworks going off 3 or 4 weeks before and 2 to 3 weeks after bonfire night here, but with the dab plug in she is not so stressed out. :thumbsup:

now with my victor meldrew hat on i think all fireworks should be banned unless at an organised display. :angry:

But I know what they go through if they dont like them my first whippet hated them and use to jump a 6ft fence

Daisy is frightned not to the extent of some, but very nervous . In the evening I put a jumper on her and it does seem to help a bit (the swaddling effect I suppose)

maddie (perfection) is a wreck tina, she didnt take any notice of them last year but shes almost having a breakdown this week

im having to carry her out to the garden to have a pee..(at 29lb shes no fly weight) :b

last night 1 went off and she went potty, and legged it to Elisha room where she seems to settle under the covers :huggles: , smudge and grace have the odd bark, but i think they are all stressing the other out :wacko:

definatly agree with the comments about fireworks, the thing is as well is they aint just fireworks anymore they are bomb like explosions. havent they supposed to brought in a new law where fireworks are only put on sale a few days before bonfire night, :rant: if so this is not working as the ruddy things have been going off for the last fortnight and will no doubt go on until xmas and new year. :rant: :rant: one of our dogs gypsy is terrified of them its horrible to see dogs suffer like this. :rant: i for one would like to see bonfire night banned altogether in this day and age there is should be no place for it as it could give terrorist the ideal cover they need to carry out there evil, :rant: in 2008 we should not be celebrating the death of a scoundral who tried to blow people up. there dave and you thought you was victor meldrew. :thumbsup:

I find putting a jumper on Fern helps her no end I know that the wearing of a tee shirt has been found to help nervous, fearful rescue dogs. When Woody is having a bad stomach day and is shaking and in a lot of pain I tightly wrap him up in a blanket so that only his head is out and after awhile the shaking stops and his colour comes back. Seems to work well on shock.

I tried Valerian Compound and other herbal remedies with Fern and they didn't work for her. Wearing a jumper is the only thing that seems to help.

I'm lucky here as there aren't many fireworks, just the odd gun shot and and thunder storm.

Sorry, about the fireworks.

We have never had any problems until we went to Holland during the Euro Football Champs this last year. The Dutch were going well and every night their team played the locals would let off fireworks - we were glad when they got knocked out of the competition as the dogs started to get a bit nervous!

Since we got back, the shooting season has started the dogs are very keen to get out their amongst the gundogs, the problems with noise seems to have stopped. Best thing is we never get anyone letting off fireworks local as we are very rural. It seems that the dogs accept the noise when in their own home.

I know people who breed birds loose a lot of stock during this time - but it seems to me that fireworks are available too early for 5th Nov and some people buy them for the New Year, Birthdays, etc. I think its time Fireworks were only available to organised bodies - there was a queue in Sainsburys this morning of people with kids buying firworks.

The next thing we will hear is that so many children got burnt with misuse of fireworks - then there will be a call to ban fireworks - then it will all go quite until the next year. :lol:

We don't get much in the way of fireworks here but last night, just as we opened the door to let ours out for a pee someone close let off about 4 of them. All the others ran back in but Hazard ran outside barking and growling at them. He was gonna have 'em

Poor old Archie is a complete nightmare with fireworks, I have tried the Valerian and it helps to some degree. Last week, there was the huge local display which is very loud, I ended up wrapping him in a very large fleece blanket and holding him so tight he couldn't move. It certainly worked quite well. I think the Valerian takes the edge off. I do the loud telly thing too. :rant: I hate the bloody things and wish they would stop selling them unless it is to a licensed event, that way you can prepare and stay in if necassary.

Hi Tina,

There is a new product on the veterinary market called Zylkene - it is quite expensive - about £10 for 15 day supply - but it is availbale over the counter & contains all natural ingedients - it is meant to make dogs feel like they have just had a meal - all satisfied & secure. It's had some really good reviews. Ive found putting the tv on loud helps & acting as calm as possible. You can also pad their ears with cotton wool.

Sorry to hear that Reg & Ron are getting so upset by the fireworks, we never had any problems with our boys until the last couple of years, our oldest two used to stand behind us in the door with fireworks going off quite close by but as they have got older they have got increasingly worried by them. We do all the same things as everyone else & find that putting on their coats helps aswell. Hope that you find something that works for them :thumbsup:

I am pleased to report that the DAB plug in thing that spews out ferimones to assist with firework trauma appears to have worked with ZORRO and MOSS. They both are amazingly relaxed during tonight's fireworks where as previously they would have been shivering wrecks.
