Hey,

I have a 12 yr old very mixed breed dog.We had to put her on a low protein dry dog food recomended by the vet as she is in the first stages of kidney failure.

All went well for a few weeks now she is refusing to eat the nuts and has gone very weak and skinny. She is actually starving to death. So i made the decision to stop this diet and allow her to have what she wants as she is fairly old and i would rather her live the rest of her life full and warm.Am I doing the right thing?

i honestly dont know what to advise other than take her back to the vet and tell him what is happening.

they will advise you of what to do with regards to her food and her general day to day life, to make sure she doesnt starve to death and is as happy and health as she can be.

i wish you all the best with your lady xxx

Thanks a million for your reply and your well wishes for Lucy..

It is so hard to see her sick and miserable.

Vet reckons if she did not take to the prescription diet there is not a whole pile more we can do for her then only keep her as comfortable as possible and just try and feed her things with as little protein as possible if i want to prolong her life.I dont want to prolong her life if she is going to be miserable any more than she is now.

She was denied proper feeding as a pup so i do not want to deny her now as an adult.

Lisa, I faced that hard decision with my old beagle girl, she was on special Liver prescription diet to support her Liver when we found a tumour there, she ate it for 4 days then refused to eat it, I decided "stuff it" if she wants a bacon roll she can have one. She was nearly 15 and the tumour was going to take her from me anyway so I let her be a wee fatty and eat whatever she wanted for the last 6 months of her life (as a beagle she had been on a permanent weight loss diet for 14 years already LOL)

Go back to your vet they should be able to help you find a low protein option that is not the prescription one (or a different make of prescription one to try), talk to them again see if there are any other supportive treatments she could have (Liver one is called Hepatosyl, I'm sure there may be a kidney one available)

Also if the food your Lucy would not eat was Royal Canin they offer a full money back guarantee on food if your dog wont eat it.

Good Luck with you doggy xxx

Thanks for the advice. :)

I think that`s the brand alright.€40.00 a bag.Was thinking of donating it back to the vets and hopefully it might give another dog a chance especially for some-one who can`t afford to buy it. I`ve started feed her pasta and small amounts of potato mixed with a few bakers to make it slightly more appealing also mash in carrot and other veg to keep her full and to minimize the kidney damage. Will limit the bakers weekly after that. Vet said no more can be done really if she won`t take to the nuts.

I think she knows something is wrong because shes up the stair and into my bed every night before me and refuses to leave and she stretches the whole way along my body for cuddles the misfortune..
