i had a truly terrible visit to the vets yesterday! i hurt my little dana's eye playing and took her to the vets to have it checked out.

we were sat in a packed waiting room having a good old gab with the other people waiting when this huge man ran into the waiting room in tears screaming for help! he was carrying a 8 month-ish fitting staffy pup in his arms, no sooner had he got through the door when this poor dogs mouth and nose exploded with blood ( and i mean it was up the walls!! ). a vet came out and rushed him into one of the backrooms, the poor little lad (tyson) was dead in minuets.

FOR THE LOVE OF DOG MAKE SURE UR RAT POISON IS OUT OF REACH!!!!!!!

i woke up in tears last night i cant stop thinking about him :(

That is truly awful. :(

that must have been a awful experience for you,i would be waking in the night if it was me too.

this would give me nightmares too dana!what a terrible experience for you.poor tyson :(

That's awful :( I personally think all poisons should be banned there are more humane ways to control pests (Whippets for one ;) ), and then these tragic accidents wouldn't happen :(

my last lurcher picked sum up and died so i know how bad it is, it tore me apart as the dog in question was fantastic, she fought hard for 3 days but i lost her,, i drank cider for six months, man it shook me up.. R.I.P. SADIE MY LOVE..

i have some mouse poison i need to put down and i shall be very very careful where i put it after reading that.

Humane traps aren't working fast enough....caught thirteen mice so far in and around my house.

The reason there are so many is that some old buildings were torn down and new houses built so all the meeces have been evicted and have come to live at mine (w00t)

Get a cat then.... I have a brilliant one that has even caught a rat...

Ok so you have to feed em etc but they are more dog friendly than poison.

Poor Tyson RIP poor little pup.

very sad, we had a couple of these cases at the vets i worked at, one died, the other pulled through.

my terriers and cats catch rats, mice, shrews, pigeons, rabbits all sorts of small critters! they occasionally work together too- quite sneaky buggers!

My whippets would kill a cat and unfortunately a dead cat ain't much good as a mouser (w00t)

We put poison down for the rats - but in proper bait boxes so it is no danger to the dogs, or the lovely wild birds. I dont like doing it and would much prefer that the dogs got them (which they do) or my OH shot them (which he does) but you cant get them all without poisining them.

i agree the only way to ensure u have killed a nest is to poison, as long as folk do it in a safe way and ensure only the vermin take it.

i had a mouse problem in an old block of flats and the guy wanted to put it down in little green trays!!! he soon got told where to get off!!!

what about if the dog finds an already poisoned mouse or rat and chews it?

....

reading what happened to that staffordshire terrier, I think the poison must be a cruel way even to kill a rat

my dogs would need to climb the ladder and open the loft hatch as mice are currently running through my loft from the other houses in my terrace.

It is a very cruel way to kill a rodent however humane traps aren't solving the problem and the killing traps don't always kill.....i don't particularly wish to be woken in the night while a badly injured rodent clatters about my loft with a trap attached to it (w00t)

The dogs would have to eat dozens of the rats to become unwell. They have never eaten a single one.

What does worry me is any birds of prey that might feed on them  :(
