Poor old Foxy went really lame in her front leg today. I could see she was in pain as she was so restless and was finding it hard to get up.

The vet thinks that her arthritis has travelled up her spine to her neck and may be putting pressure on her spinal cord.

Her shoulder muscles have atrophied and her neck is stiff with restricted movement.

We have already used Metacalm which did not work for her as the arthritis just got progressively worse. She is now been put on steroids.

Poor old lady! (only she is not that old a 11 and 3/4

I have had her on Glucosamine and Sharks cartlidge for 10 weeks and she had seemed much brighter and happier of late before today.

I hope that the steroids might help.

Does anyone else have a suggestion that might make things more comfortable for her?

Thanks

Eve

Acupuncture was very helpful for my old collie in the last year of his life. He'd had a broken pelvis before he came to me and it became arthritic. Hope you can find something to make Foxy more comfortable.

Foxy had her first steroid tablets at lunchtime but she is really bad tonight. I am having to carry her outside as she just does not want to get up and is almost unable to stand.

She is no powderpuff at 15 / 16KG!

Poor old thing, I cannot even give her a painkiller as she has the steroids. :(

I'm so sorry about Foxy :( :(

She must be feeling so helpless.

I am sending you lots of hugs and luck as it must be very hard for you both to cope with this :huggles: :luck: :huggles: :luck: :huggles: :luck: :huggles: :huggles:

Hi there Eve

I sadly lost my little Whippet, Maggie, to spinal arthritus in January. Foxy would appear to be displaying exactly the same symptoms as Maggie. I too had to carry Maggie outside in my arms as she just couldn't get up. I sadly had to have her pts as she was constantly crying in pain and I also couldn't keep her warm enough inspite of the fact that she lay next to the radiator, which I left on 24/7, covered in fleeces.

Maggie was on steroids but my vet also prescribed a pain killer, not sure of the name now but it was similar to Metacam and could be taken along side the steroids. I found this did help with the pain. Maggie was also 11, far young to be suffering with what I thought was a more elderly dogs complaint. My heart goes out to you and Foxy. I do hope the steroids give some improvement and she picks up.

Liza xx

I saw a bed in Pets At Home this week that was a heat pad with vibration - something like that might help to make her more comfortable - I hope you see some improvement really soon :luck:

Thank you for your best wishes.

I am sorry to hear about Maggie, Lisa. I lost Foxys son Peat in Feburary to a Aortic Thromboembolism. He was only nine. Foxy has really gone downhill since. She picked up when Toddy arrived and has been much better these last 3 weeks before relapsing today.

The vet does have another tablet a sort of steroid with Metacalm. He wants to try straight steroids first because the other tablets have serious side effects and most dogs do not survive more than a year on them.

I did not know that Arthritis can be so bad in a dog that is only 11 or that it can progress so quickly. Foxy was 100% this time last year. Foxy is not crying with pain, she just lies there shuffling about to try and get comfy when the pain gets too much. I know her well however (she is not the crying kind) and I know that she is in a lot of pain.

I have to say, that although having Toddy come to stay must be stressful for her she seems to cope well with him and strangely enough, he seems to know that she is in pain and does not bother her at all. All 3 have been leaving her to have her bed to herself. It is so touching.

Our Manchester Terrier had arthritis in her back legs, which started when she was about 10. She used to take Metacam every day and we also gave her cod liver oil capsules (you can get them really cheaply from Lidl of all places!). It's always hard to have an animal in pain, you feel very helpless.

Poor pup... I don't have any advice to offer, but I just thought I'd pop in and wish you both the best.

Thank you

Foxy was on Metacalm when her back legs started getting bad. The vet took her off Metacalm as after a few weeks on max dose, the shoulder started to play up. he said it was not really working. She was fine for 3 weeks but now this. We will just have to wait and see how the steroids go. I think that if they are going to work, it will happen within a few days.

im so sorry to hear about Foxy,as someone has suggested maybe try acupunture , or homeopathic treatment

with one of my whippets whos not even 8 years yet..is started to suffer with septic artritis in her toe joint which may travel further up,shes also on ABs clamindycin and also taking predleutropin as she had spinal cord damage which effects her back legs,

i do feel for you as it so hard watching your beloved dog in pain and you want to do as much as possible

i do feel that there can be so many side effects taking certain medication long term, does it do more harm than good, but im not a vet and only go what they have advice me

wishing you all the best

Some people swear by Bioflow Magnetic Collors. Hope things improve for you, its awful when they are ill.

I too would recommend Bioflow collars - I have seen the huge difference they make to some dogs - but you would not get an instant response with one. I would expect to see a difference in 2-3 weeks, but that may not be a quick enough result for your girl if she is in constant pain.

I wear a Bioflow bracelet for my hip and back problems, so I can certainly recommend them from a human perspective!

Having lost my beloved boy last June after 6 months of suffering with a prolapsed disc, I feel for you at this time.

Eleanor

I tried Bioflow bracelets myself some time ago, they had a limited effect and physio helped in the end.

Unfortunately, the degeneration of the neck bone and the compression on her spinal cord in Foxy's case would probably lessen their effectiveness.

I may try the accupuncture if the steriods do not work. As the alternative drug is not appealing. She gets her 2nd dose of steroid today so hopefully she may start to pick up.

I have to find something to help before winter because the damp cold really got to her this year.

Ideally, I should move to a warm climate!!!! :)

Sorry, cant add anything to comments already posted but good luck with Foxy, it is so awful when they are unwell and you feel so helpless. :(

Woody is on steroids which have changed his life - without them he could not stand up, they have increaced his quality of life beyond measure. Alongside the steriods I use a herbal liquid to put in his feed, which I swear by, the company do a dog and horse version and I have used both to great success. Its by NAF (NaturalAnimalFeeds) and the product is called Relief, it is main natural ingredient is devils claw and its for joint comfort and pain relief. I think its very good and only cost £7.99-ish for 250ml which lasts ages,it is fine along side the steriods, Woody has has no problems with it. Could be worth a try for your girl. Hope this helps and she feels better soon :luck:

Foxy has not picked up much this morning but it is early days.

I have ordered a BIOFLOW collar which should arrive in a few days.

I understand that the benefits of these collars are not seen for a few weeks but by then we will know if the steroids are working.

The vet suggests an X-ray to rule out bone cancer as this condition has progressed really fast.

I am playing wait and see as the X-ray requires sedation and Foxy is terrified of the vets.

At the end of the day, nothing can cure this but I do want her to have a pain free, good quality of life.

I may try the Devils claw as this cannot do any harm. I also believe that Green Lippid Mussel is excellent so I may see if I can get a combination.

Thanks again

Their stuff is good, I'd forgotten about it but I used to give Taff their HipRite as well as the acupuncture. This is a link to their website: http://www.naf-uk.com/canine/ . Do hope you can find some relief for your lovely girl, it is miserable to watch them suffer.

OK

I will probably try that too

Poor Foxy is going to be pretty loaded what with steroids, a magnetic collar, her Glucosamine and Chondroitin and NAF Devils claw.

Only problem will be that I will not know what works.

Lots of suggestions, i hope something

can help Foxy be more comfortable :)

I hope Foxy finds something that can improve her situation.
