I don't know how he did it but Fred seems to have broken his tail.

I just noticed it was looking a bit limp at the end and a bit out of line. We think he must have wagged it a bit hard and knocked it, poor chap.

Having searched the forum for some tips, I read that a good way to let it heal itself is to splint it with a curler. Someone has given me a small, lightweight velcro curler and we've taped both ends with bandage tape. It seems to be doing the trick. I'm not going to let a vet amputate it at his age, and he'd just pull off any bandages they'd put on. He's on the metacam just in case.

He doesn't seem to mind it at all or be in any pain (even before we administered the metacam)...it should amuse the local dog owners as it's not uncommon for him to sport some weird accessory or other, the odd little black boot, lampshade, woolly jumper etc :teehee:

Excuse the poor photo, but you can just make out the offending tail accoutrement...

My afghan hound broke her tail running in he snow years ago .

The vet put on a plaster of paris and it healed up fine .

Poor Fred hope it heals up fine for him too :huggles:

Poor Fred!!! Hope it mends quickly for him and that he returns to good wagging form :luck: One of my cats had a totally limp tail after a bad fight and I was worried that it would have to be amputated, but with lots of TLC and some laser treatment it recovered really well, will keep fingers crossed for Fred.

look after your tail Fred, hope it heals well :luck:

Hope Fred heals well Nicola... :huggles: :luck:

My first whippet broke the tip of hers too ...after having it trapped in the door...it did heal quickly but always had a slight kink in it.

Apparently its quite a common problem in dogs with long slim tails...ie whippets and greys.

Awwww, bless xxx

I hope it heals up well for him :luck:

My little Rosie has a kink at the end of her tail - guess she must have got it shut in a door when she was young too but I will never know as she came to us when she was 14 months old :D It doesn't bother her at all

Awwwww, poor Fred - hope his tail heals soon :huggles:

awww poor little Fred...hope he heals up soon x

The plastic cylindrical curlers are best (and hard to find...) as they allow air flow

Good luck Fred xxxx

Poor Fred. I hope he is better soon.

The curler should do the trick as long as the blood is circulating to the tip of the tail OK and there are not any trapped nerves or blood vessels. :luck: :luck: :luck:

Hope Fred heals quickly. My Roscoe has a wonky bit on the end of his tail which I assume must have happened when he was very tiny as we have had him since he was 8 weeks old and it just grew that way!

Poor Fred; get better soon sweetheart

Oh Nicola, poor old Fred! I hope his tail heals well!

Both the mins have kinky tails now - arthritic I guess as they aren't getting any younger!!
