ourws all free run as there dogs and pets first. even milo and boris at 11 years old enjoy a quck trot some run on there own and some with others just depending on the dogs. even littel crappy bones Indy free runs now its the best thing to bulied her up. Mine would go crazy over winter if they didnt get off lead as we dont bend race. get there recall good and there no problem

all mine free run even harley at 14 has a little run

like wendy says if recall good there's no reason why they shouldn't

Its good to see 31 free run and only 1 doesn't...sad for their dogs though  :(
Can see no reason to have a glorious breed like we are blessed with and not free run them...its what they were born to do

i never used to free run my dogs, did them no harm.

physically maybe not, but unless they have large runs or a garden to run in, I find it sad not to free run them...when you look on the face of a whippet running they are at their happiest, why have a sight hound and not free run them....might as well get a chihuahua

I agree totally, If they free run from pups they learn to balance quicker, and yes there is a bigger risk of injury, :( but dogs can pick up injuries anywhere, especially the back garden, :p ,

This breed was born to run and i for one wouldn't ever change this.

only my opinion. Di

:p May i say what a good topic.

Mine all free run :)) everyday, but when they are due to race i usually keep them on leads for the 2 weeks before they race then its rest for a couple of days after then back to their free runs. They love it i couldn't imagine keeping them on leads forever and never letting them off :( where's the enjoyment of having the breed if you do that :( i know some people do but no way could i, i've had lots of injuries with my lot when they have been free running but i think it's just an ocupational hazzard with the breed all part and parcel of having one. Clare.

try to gallop one day walk the next. keep on lead 2 day prior to race.

pups free run fron 12 week on the cricket field one at a time think pups need to stretch and find there balance. i like to massage as much as possible.

when we go on our railway walk they all off . just sniff and canter about.

everthing i know about racing dogs i learnt off my dad who was one of the best greyhound men in the area,it was he who allways said if a dog is kept on the lead when it comes race it will want to run. just look at my record with the good dogs iv'e had ,there must be something in it.

IT WAS A METHOD THAT WORKED FOR ME

I'm not saying that it didn't work for you or that you are not a very knowledgable man, I'm talking about the happiness and well being of the dogs, my whippet will never win a race but she is very happy and well adjusted with her hours of free running a week.

If a dog was bred to run, surely it should be allowed to do just that, not just for a few minutes up a track when the owner decides but daily as a natural part of life...sorry just my opinion

maybe thats why you dog hasnt won, you are maybe leaving your race in the field.they can get to much its finding the balance for your dog  :luck:

Injuries:

Blaze free-running caught her leg, got a skin tear, had a bandage for a few hours and then anti-biotics from the vet, straight out free-running within a few days.

Blaze at the end of a race, went in for the lure first, another dog wearing a broken plastic muzzle came in after her gashed straight down Blaze's leg to the bone and snapped a guider, sixteen stitches, anti-biotics form the vet, on three legs for a fortnight, couldn't walk, off racing for a month.

I'd take my chances with them off lead free-running any day  . When I take my dogs out off-lead and see them all running and enjoying themselves they seem so animated and alive. I would give up racing tomorrow if I had to make the choice between the two, who cares if you miss a race meeting (any race meeting) because you're dogs bumped itself, another day another race you'll stand just as much chance of winning the next race as you did the one you missed :teehee: .

 I couldn't agree more. :)) Diane

It would be nice to hear from the people who DONT free run, :- "

theres a point, should muzzles be checked prior to race for damage, protrusions.??

Maybe one day  , but she is far from being a racing bred Whippet.

we run ours from being puppies but once they start racing it stops pic up unnecessary injury, but everyone has there own methods of getting dogs fit

I don't race mine but if I did I would employ the same training methods that I do for my point to point racehorses.

If the ground and weather are suitable, they go out in the field every day for an hour or two, even at peak fitness. This gives them the chance to be "horses" and, IMO, their mental attitude is much better because of this which makes them easier to manage and train.

I have had wins with every horse I have owned, bar one who couldn't stay the trip :D

So if I was racing my whippets, they would get to free run every day and chase bunnies, which is what they enjoy the most and, IMO, what keeps them sane :D

I'm completely off topic here Jane but your posts always make me smile I just love the little rhyme on your signature about K9P

fine line to tread, keeping them fit, keen etc and overdoing it i'd imagine, especially if the animal is the type that just wont quit. saw a pair run their owner into the ground 2 doors from where i did some work. the grey hounds had bolted when she opened her door, and could she catch them? could she heck  mind you, as soon as she stopped to sit down, they both slowed right down and i collared them, the little sods (they'd clearly had a marvellous time, giving HER some exercise, judging by the almost smug expressions on their faces :teehee: )

We always free run ours from puppies and all through even when they are race fit they get free runs Although our Boo wont run she just walks with ya (unless she see's a bird flying low eh mum lol) but she still gets let off the lead to have the chance! Tora she loves free running she would be off all day if you let her and Mums little Meeka (the worm) runs great big circles and jumps in every bit of long grass she see's they love it!!! Its just some extra fun for them!!! if its free running on there own chasing a toy person to person running it all helps with fitness and letting them enjoy their life! (w00t)

Dont let mine free run together and neve rhave I let them off one at a time and they love it :))

free run my dogs every day always have they love it keaps them fit :p
