Many of you will have already heard about Carmel Smith's awful motorway accident where her car turned over, sliding along the road on its roof. She has asked me to make the following post for her.

Thank you for all the good wishes that have been conveyed to me, the flowers and the cards. If you know me and want to speak to me then don’t be scared to pick up the phone.

The next time you see the emergency services in a hurry, move over!! If you see any highway men on the motorway don’t swear at them, they were first on the scene and absolutely marvellous with the dogs. Della spent the most traumatic hours of her life in the company of the most amazing group of men we have ever met.

The prognosis for our other 5 dogs is optimistic. We will be eternally grateful to Ray Jones who, some time ago, told me off the one time I had loose dogs in the car because I’ve never done it since and that’s what saved them. The custom made cage saved Fly, the greyhound’s life. The firemen couldn’t cut it with bolt cutters. They had to undo the nuts on the escape hatch to get her out. I don’t think she would have been so lucky in a collapsible cage. The next time I put a cage in a car, I won’t be tying it in with anything not designed to resist impact. Crepe bandages just don’t do the job!

In memory of Della, look at your car with a mind to how safe it would be in a similar situation. What loose objects are there? The loose bedding actually helped and fortunately all the dangerous stuff (scissors etc.) was trapped in the boot because of the dog guards. If they hadn’t of been, I’m sure it would have been a lot worse.

I give thanks to God that I live to aggravate you all another day.

And so do I Carmel.

RIP little Della :(

I will speak to you very soon my dear friend.

RIP little Della .........As you said last night you were VERY lucky as were the rest of your lovely babes in all honesty ..........Love to you all, and i'll speak to you later :huggles:

R.I.P Della :(

Dear Carmel I hope you and your other dogs are recovering well after such a horrific accident. I'm so sorry that you lost Della.

Me and my pup was involved in an RTA last october with a bus - 5 minute journey for dog food where instead of caging him in the back he was popped onto the passenger seat. He was extremely lucky as he fell and was held by the gearbox column on impact rather than going through the windowscreen which would of been likely if he hadn't been lay down at the time. I agree totally about cages, mine too were mangled and if he'd been in there he would of had to have been cut out but he wouldn't of been thrown out onto the road either, a far grimmer prospect. Another thing I would add is that if you do choose cages pick ones with doors on either side because it increase the chance of getting a door open. I also prefer to keep the leashes on my dogs so if the untoward happens, someone has a better chance of keeping hold of them once they've got them out of your vehicle.

NOW 2 WEEKS AFTER MY ACCIDENT ON SOUTH BOUND A1 I REALIZE HOW VERY VERY FORTUNATE MY MATE AND MY 2 DOGS WERE TO GET AWAY WITH MINOR STUFF AND A MINOR COLLISION. SO SORRY TO HEAR OF THIS TRAGEDY.

Glad you are here to tell the tale Carmel, but so sad to hear you lost Della :(

Something like this does make you re-evaluate things, and it's good that you've brought this to our attention. We always have our dogs caged while travelling, but I do panic about what would happen in the case of an accident. For stability our cages are secured together with bungee hooks, which hopefully we could remove in a hurry if necessary. We have purposely bought vehicles with doors on all sides for the dogs safety. Unfortunately, although our cages all have doors on two sides, they are not all accessible because of the lack of space, and cages next to each other.

We send our best wishes and hope you will get over this accident, and be back racing soon. :luck:

how terrible! so sorry for your loss! my thoughts are with you at this awful time :huggles: :huggles:

Im so sorry you lost Della, what an awful thing to happen. Hope your starting to feel better :flowers:

When we had our comparitively minor accident on the motorway in February we were probably only travelling at about 40MPH but everything ended up on the floor. All the cupboard doors came open and everything came out. Even the oven door came open and the grill pan went flying across the van. Makes you think.

Hope the other dogs are continuing to improve Carmel. :luck:

So sorry to hear about this.

RIP Della and :luck: to the rest of the dogs and Carmel.

Amen to that Carmel. :huggles:

That's so true June. Although we have a guardsman dog cage, our dogs travel on the back seat, and Maggie always sits in the front  I won't be doing that again :sweating:

Oh dear, we wondered where she was on Wednesday  So, so sorry to hear about this and the little one that was lost. We shall certainly be reviewing our cage arrangements in light of this. :luck: for the recovery of all.

Im so sorry to hear of your loss, but am glad that you and the other dogs are doing ok..

So sorry to hear this terrible news. Reading this thread has made me have a re-think about the way I transport the dogs, so that's a positive effect for other whippet owners but a very very sad way to learn :(
