Not long after I first brought Cash home, my parents visited.

I was playing ball with him (and had not yet taught him to return it)

Mum stepped in to play and psyched him up by clapping her hands at him and saying things like "Go boy!" which got him going and he growled and barked and ran with excitement.

Now I cannot get him to return the ball or a toy. He barks and play-growls (sounds like a car revving at high pitch) and runs away with it.

Any training tips for teaching a naughty boy to return an item?

My Chelsea does this, the only way to get the toy is to offer to "swap" with a better one. She is over 7 now, so I've given up hope. My others will drop and give

I'd go for ignorance, when our Buffy has something she trots round showing it off, me trying to get it off her just makes it more of a game. The minute I ignore her she comes up and drops it by my feet!

Incidently he's blooming gorgeous and I note he has an affection for black and white toys like my Black and white parti does! He was over the moon last week when he met a dalmation!

Cool pics (w00t)

The way I taught Nana to retrieve was to attatch a tennis ball wrapped in a rabbit skin to a ball of string.

Nana is passionate about her tennis ball wrapped in rabbit skin and once she is holding onto it she is very unlikely to drop it so once I'd thrown it and she'd caught it I could reel her in like a fish, saying 'bring it in' the whole time, when she got to me I would swap it for a bit of cheese, about the only thing she loves more than tennis balls. This took about a month, but now she is a fantastic retriever, and it is very rare for her to disappear off with anything.

Hope this helps. The one thing is you've got to be careful they don't get caught in the string. The nack is to pull it tight as soon as they've caught hold of the ball so they don't have a chance to get it in a knot.

I've tried swapping - he's not interested - what he's already got is fine, thank you! I've even tried food - that worked ... twice. Then he said no, the ball was better than food. Blows most of the training theories out of the window really.

I've also tried ignorance. He's happy to be ignored.

He's not one to bring it back just out of arms reach to show off and then dash off with it - he just doesn't come back at all. Runs to fetch it - then just saunters off somewhere with it. Ignores me calling him to come. And the minute I make an advance to come get it - he's off to another corner, "revving" with delight. Even if he's temporarily dropped it to sniff something else or scratch himself, whatever, the minute he realises I'm headed towards him he barks with delight, grabs the ball and runs off to another corner.

He's just a bl**dy :clown: !!!

Lovely pictures Lana - hes a really handsome boy.

Im afraid Oscar wont give anything back to you either - even for a foody treat. :- "

The string idea sounds alright Olivia - I reckon I'll give that a go! 8)

you could try using a extendable lead just a short distance across a room or in garden to start with (carefull of the cord and legs tho) then when he has the toy gently pull him towards you saying the words you want as a command, this worked with charlie but i started doing it at bout 10 wks old, not for long sessions either as he used to get bored very easily!

LOL LOL. That sounds just like Chelsea!! (w00t) :huggles:

What you need is a REALLY restricted space to start with, less than a quarter of a room so you can play 'give that to me'. Just keep handing him, not throwing, the ball and taking it away again, even with your hand on his collar. Treat some times but stupid voice is normally enough. Then roll it, Im talking two/three foot, he must be near enough not to have you chase him. Dogs are thick, he thinks he knows what you want to do but hes got mixed up. At other times dont even LOOK at the ball or attempt any other sort of ball game until he is quite clear you say bring and he brings. Best of luck with whatever you try :)

What lovely pictures   Very handsome

He is gorgeous Lana   I have a new found fondness for Black & whites :- "

If Sienna has a toy she will bring it but not let go but if I keep hold of it and say her name a couple of times and say "give it to me" she will give it to me,but I have to say her name first  callie won't even go get it

I would just leave him to it if he is happy playing that way!!!

Ah! Baby steps! That's ususally my own advice to others, why didn't I think of that?

I have tried with him with a toy in the lounge room but I was throwing it a little distance, not just giving it and taking it back. Right! We'll start there! Thanks Karen. :*

With a face like that i'd let him keep the ball
