Worried about your ageing dog's rear end beginning to go? Has he lost his mojo, does he not want to walk far, would he rather snooze in the garden? Does he struggle to get up steep slopes, look like an old carthorse ready for the knacker's yard?

Simples. Spend over £130 on a vet consultation and Galliprant (NSAID), and the moment you've forked out, he'll be back to his old self, happy to go for walks and even runs. Even better, his poos will firm up and his stinky wind will disappear.

Even better... This all happens as soon as you've handed over your dosh, before you've even given him the first tablet!

Thanks for that, Jasper

I'm wondering whether his lethargy over the summer was more heat/humidity related, and whether he actually had a bit of a tummy upset last week - he was chomping grass relentlessly. Now the weather's cooled, I think we'll monitor him over the weekend and keep a close eye on those joints, then consider giving him the meds and see if we notice a difference.

I'd mentioned to OH that the vet had said that this drug bypasses the stomach, and he asked 'It's not a suppository, is it?' Now I'm wondering if Jasper overheard us.... :D

Why is my dog so contrary? After a three-week trial of the drug, which was inconclusive as he seemed to perk up as the weather cooled down, and during which he had the odd iffy poo which was probably drug related, I stopped giving it to him on Monday - and yesterday he developed bloody mucousy poos (sorry if you're eating). This is a knowm if unusual, side effect of the drug, but he has to muddy the waters (pun not intended....) by developing it after stopping taking it. He's also been having problems where after having a poo, he seems stuck in 'pooing' position for a bit. I think this is probably related, but the first time, he did it after he came back into the house, and he'd never strain to poo in the house, so I'm hoping it's not joint related, like when you bend over and your back goes and you can't straighten up again.

Anyhoo, I had a word with the vet receptionist, who had a word with the vet, and he now has some antibiotics (not sure why?) and a binding paste. Give it a couple of days and knowing him, he'll have constipation:confused:

Probably post-poo gut spasms are causing the bendy-over position. I think ABs are a good idea in case he has an infection, but as my vet points out, ABs needed in the hindgut have been digested long before they get there. With a normal dog :) I'd suggest asking for an AB injection, but probably not a good idea for Jas, so hope for the best with what you give him orally.

Ah, gut spasms would make sense - thank you! So far, so good on the poo front this morning...

OH and I have a game we play - 'That would be a good band name' - because he's been in a few pub bands and they can never come up with a good name when they need one. We've been contemplated whether 'Postie Poo and the Gut Spasms' would be a good one....:D

Hmm, not sure on the 'postie poo' bit, don't really want to think of my postie having a poo:eek:!! Tho do like the 'gut spasms' that would of been a great name for a pub punk band!:D Hope Jasper's gut stays good for you now.

My postie is the spitting image of Robert Plant. Sadly, of Robery Plant as he is now, not as he was then.

The antibiotics & binding paste seemed to work, but over the last couple of weeks his poos got softer again, then there was a hint of blood... Yesterday it got worse so I made an appointment with the vet for this afternoon. On this morning's walk he didn't do a proper poo but did four separate dribbles of, basically, blood :(

He seems fine in himself, but I'm really worried. And it did all seem to start with the Galliprant, which is worrying as it's supposed to be very gentle on the stomach.

I dont know anything about Galliprant but a few months ago T had to have Omeprazole which is supposed to help dodgy tummies. He was sick every day on it.

Some meds just don't suit some dogs, even if they ought to help.

Hopefully that's all it is.

He's been off it for a few weeks now though. Maybe he just needs a longer course of whatever to settle things down properly. I'll also ask if it would be worth doing a stool analysis.

I now have some super-strength probiotic & poo binder, and have taken in a sample of poo for analysis. Well, more goo than poo really... I'd saved it from this afternoon's walk just in case the vet wanted it, but when I took it in I realised I might look a bit odd walking with a poo bag but no dog....

Jasper's poo sample was fine:) Or at least, as fine as it can be when it's made up of roughly equal proportions of blood, mucous and runny poo... sorry if you're eating.....

So we assume that either he had a bug that has now gone but thrown his digestion off-kilter, or he's one of the rare cases that respond in this way to the Galliprant. My money is very much on the second. Today he did his first decent poos with no sign of blood, but I'm going to keep him on the Yudigest a bit longer, and maybe even long term at a low dose, given that his poos have never been that firm. If he still has problems I might at least have to try him on a digestion support kibble....

Reading up on the rarity of the 'blood and mucus' side effect with Galliprant, I ended up thinking that maybe his problems weren't down to the drug after all, but were just a badly timed bug. So a few days ago, as he was limping a bit on a front leg, I gave it another go.

Yesterday, he had a slightly dodgy poo - not that that's unusual for him. This morning he only walked about 100 feet before turning from home, and then went into the garden to eat his bodyweight in grass. This afternoon, he did a really crumbly yellow poo... and then threw up. So I'm sure it is the Galliprant after all.

Once he seems back to normal, I'll be starting him on YuMove Senior. But I don't want to introduce anything new while his digestion's not quite right.
