Having always been the most careful of dogs, Gelert managed to acquire a very small tear (3mm diameter) on his elbow in pursuit... of one of his girlfriends (he'd have been much more careful with the bunnies :- " ) .

I was inclined to leave it to see how it goes, but he is looking a bit miserable and yelps when you lift his paw >_< It's so tiny though, would a stitch be worth it? I don't think it's in a place where there are any forces upon it that might open it up more.

Poor Gelert  ........If it's only small it should be ok .......My only worry is that he may catch it and rip it more :( ........The Twit was glued last time just to hold the tear in place ........It did the job, but took a bit longer to heal :)

Thanks. Well, he won't be going far til it's mended - no racing, bunnies or romps with girlfriends for a while :'(

If it's really tiny as you say I would be inclined to just keep an eye on it for a while, the yelping when you lift his paw could be down to the fact that he has most probably strained or pulled something in his efforts :( again keep a watch on it & if it gets no better pop along to the vets to give yourself piece of mind :))

Our coursing Whippet when out working as a young dog did something very similar  which fixed itself after a few days rest, but to this day (he's now rising 6yrs old) if he over exerts himself it would still flare up :( Even just a small knock on it when playing with the others can make him favour it for a short while.

But 99% of the tme he hares about as if he's a pup (w00t) & it certainly has'nt affected his working ability

Thanks, that's interesting. I don't think he pulled anything, he did a lot of running after he got it as we were a long way from home, and looked pretty sound on the way back. He is the sort of dog that makes a big fuss over any sort of minor discomfort. We'll take him to the vets tomorrow just in case.

Poor Gelert :( he was being so brave when his girl friends were with him :- " .

I promise I won't tell them he's complaining now (they are soooooo in love I don't want to diminish him in their eyes  )

But I and Nana send big hugs and kisses :huggles: (for those of you who don't know our mad situation- Gelert is head over heals with Josie and Tess, and they seem to reciprocate, but Nana, who is speyed, is ignored)

I think it might be worth getting Mr B or colleague to have a look tomorrow, then you KNOW that he's OK (I'm sure he is but its always a worry)

Well we had a very pathetic night. OH made an extra special bed (quilted basket with sheepskin on top, plus duvets to keep him warm, all set up over the warm pipes in the floor in the bathroom) and is carrying him up and down stairs, on and off the bed as otherwise he just sits there with a slightly raised paw in utter pathos. He's just taken him off to the vets now. :sweating:

Now why don't I get that sort of attention when I'M ill ?

Well the verdict was that no, it doesn't need a stitch but there is some infection; the muscle just below the tear is inflamed so needs antibiotics (which is why the whole leg seemed painful), and the hole just needs lots of licking (which he can do himself, fortunately :x ) and occasional bathing with Epsom salts.

:D Really glad that gelert's wee injury is just that!! :D

Hope he feels better soon & is soon back chasing his girls (w00t)

In the pic you posted he looks like he really knows how to put on the "woe is me" face :- "

Let's face it - all whippets have got that "woe is me" face down to a fine art! No wonder they get away with murder!! :- "

Hope Gelert is better soon. :D

poor baby - glad its nothing serious..!

sending our

Yet more pathetic - after the ordeal of having to have raw lamb chunks for lunch (to conceal the antibiotic tablets), he also has to undergo the torture of being forced to eat pigs ears, to distract him from pulling his epsom salt poultice off.

(The serious bit is that apparently there is a small risk the infection could spread to the elbow joint; the poultices should keep the swelling down).
