I posted a while ago, but cant find the thread asking people to recomend a head collar or halti for 'puller' dogs...

well after finally making the decision my gentle leader headcollar finally arrived this week. (from Ebay I might add )

Anyway Ive tried it on Oscar and Archie...as they are the main two pullers here and when walking three together on my own

find I get real problems with my shoulders and arms, .....

I would thoroughly recomend this....

and Ive ordered another Im so impressed, its like walkiing a different dog, and makes life so much easier.

how odd that you should post this (w00t) i took all 6 of mine for a walk today and maddie and cally pull like mad :sweating: :sweating: :sweating:

on the way home i thought some kind of halti for them might make it less stressful on my arms

Yes Julie, Ive been having trouble with my shoulders and neck pains....and walking three dogs is bad enough sometimes...

Ive been trying it out with Archie over the past two days...and today with Oscar...they didnt try to resist it even...and walk like lambs...its unbelievable really.

Ive just ordered another one this morning. Will make life easier for me Im sure.

The only 1 fault I have ...I ordered a medium size and there is so much spare webbing, Im thinking of cutting some off,

and the small size says recomended for Yorkshire terriers, small poodles etc...so would be way too small for my lads.

Can i just say as i used to sell these myself that they are good and do work but...... here comes the but....... be careful as they can rub around the eyes and cause some discomfort! They will try to get it off when you first put it on no doubt they will try to paw it off claw it off and rub it off even go to the extent of rolling on the floor to get it off! ;) But do stick with it as they do get used to them after a few days and won't resist anymore. Also i have had feed back on these as rather working wonders or some people say that the dog gets used to it and pulls with it's head instead like a horse ...infact ive walked dogs who have done that wearing them you get all tangled up it's not funny :) Some pro's and con's there peeps! Also you could check out the stop pull harness there ok with padding under the arms to stop rubbing occuring. Again simular product but pressure is around and under the arms and not the face. They work for some and not others just depends on the dog. Bit of advice Halties should be used by leading the dog up close like a horse not let it roam at the end of the lead this will only cause more pulling and eye irratation. Hope that helps! xx

I have sworn by Gentle Leader headcollars for years.

However as dabroad says, some dogs do paw them about (beyond the initial settling in period of wearing them) and this can rub and cause discomfort.

I have a VERY strong whippet who didn't get along with the GL, but friends with German Shepherds and Clumber Spaniels told me about the Dogmatic headcollar and I now use this for that particular whippy (I still use GLs but not for him).

Dogmatic do a synthetic padded type of headcollar, and they are wonderful - no more twisting/rubbing and so on.

Best wishes

I posted some pictures a while back of the girls in their headcollars and got

a few remarks Janis about different types. I have tried a few but still go

back to the figure of 8's which the girls are wearing in this picture. I've never

had any trouble with eye's, rubbing or escaping with them. Plus they come in

all colours

Thanks Ann, yes I could remember the thread and the comments... just couldnt find it....Im sure I started one too... :D

Ive heard about the figure of 8 types too, but these seem to work....so hopefully fingers crossed no more problems...

I agree with Ann I have used every tipe of head coller and leader over the years and hands down every time the fig 8 wins every time i have lots of differt colours some just the head coller some with lead atached iv even used them on a 3 way lead no problem weather greyhound or whippet or loopy lurcher.

I agree, a properly fitted Gentle Leader makes walking a boisterous dog or dog that pulls so much more pleasant

 I too have an Oscar who used to pull...As you say, as soon as we put it on it was almost as if I were walking someone elses whippet!!!

Worth every penny and Oscar is now a joy to walk.

 Ive got a dogmatic headcollar for Ozzy - cant walk him without it! recommend it to anyone who is struggling with a pulling dog.

I forgot to say i have a Canny Collar which was ok but i dont

know if it was just me but i found it a pain to get on and off,

unless the dog stood nice and still.....

And i did find it rode up close to the eyes.

Yes, I've got the canny collar for Muffin. It works quite well although he still pulls with it - it's just a manageable pull! :- He's OK with me putting it on but it does rub him under the chin a bit and I know he doesn't like it because he still attempts to get it off occasionally. I hate using something which he finds uncomfortable but it's the only way I can manage both of them together on a walk. :sweating:

This should be very helpful with our Sam. He has always pulled especially for the first 5 minutes of his walk. I will take a look on ebay.

We took the boys out for the first time yesterday and Jack coped with it brilliantly. Only 5 minutes gentle walking as he uses the large back garden for free running once or twice a day but he loved being out with Sam.

Thanks for a very useful thread.
