I weighed Tilly and Scrumpy yesterday (They are both show dogs)

Scrumpy is 28lbs, stands 20 1/2" floor to sholder, 19 1/2" long

Tilly is 35lbs, Stands 21" floor to sholder, 22" long (she has been spayed)

We have a field across the road from us so i take them over there let them off they run around for about 30mins then come home (trying to be honest here) sometimes its mad running, sometimes they just sniff around...

They get fed a tin of food split between them and some mixer biscuits breakfast and a bowl of complete biscuits for tea, water down all the time.

So what do i do to get the weight off her and keep him steady?

Please help, 67 have viewed but no advice

I only want to know what you feed your dogs, so i can get some weight off mine

Hi Kim, plenty of excersise, im out 3 times a day with jill, she is i think if i remember rightly, 19 inches to the shoulder, weighs 12.3 kgs, 27.1lb, for breakfast

she gets, a drink of milk semi skimmed, with some biscuits, her main meal is made up by me, consists of, meat, pasta, rice, vegetables, and mixer, linseed oil capsule every other day with her meal, supper, just a few biscuits, or sometimes a banana, as for fruit i also add this to her main meal, i try to vary as much as i can, sardines i just use my imagination, but as for keeping her weight down, the difference in you and i is the fact i work my dog and work her hard, plenty of jumps in her daily excersise.

Hope ive been of some help to you, and appreciate i have more time on my hands than you have, with you being a mum

Thank you Keith xx

I know i need to up her exersice so i will road walk her twice a day, i will slowly up the distance. As she has never really road walked before, do i need worry about her pads??

She tends to get bits and pieces the kids give her, so half eaten meals , which isnt good for her really, so that will stop and i will keep an eye on whats going in.

Once i get fitter i can take her through the woods so lots of up and down over logs chasing squirels etc

Plenty of excercise is the key

Home made food is the best plenty of veg and pasta and rice with mince

Lots on here use a barf diet which is all raw food

Tinned food is mainly fat and water so not really good for them all the time just occasionally as required

Less input , more output!

Wish I could follow that advice....

My boy is currently on a diet but as he cant exercise as much at the moment as is still recovering from an RTA it is quite hard to shift the weight. We will get there soon!

Some dry foods are available as a "light" version which you could use temporarily for a few weeks to get the weight down. My Mum has just that with her whippet bitch, she used Baker's Light and within 3 weeks Jessie is back to ideal weight. Now she can go back on normal fresh food. Apparently Bakers is very smelly and the dogs like it, I don't think she uses it normally though as she feels it has too many colourants!

Great thanks

It seems people are reluctant to say what they feed their dogs, why?

Is it fear of what others will say or because they have a secret recipe for a winning dog :- "

Sorry i meant to say they are show bred NOT show dogs, as i dont show them, i prefer to race.....

I use Burns Organic dry food. They love it.

I also give sardines, mackeral once a week. Miced lamp & tripe. Eggs. But the dry food is their stable food and probably the closet dry food to natural or so I am advised by TC!

i dont theres any secret, imo take them off tins full of sugar and crap put them on raw meat bone and a little top grade complete ie nutro and bags of exercise

I feed mine arden grange performance.

Dolly is 17.5" tall and weighs 8.3 kg

Mojo is about 20" tall and weighs about 15kg

They are the opposite i try to get weight on them!!

They normally have an hour walk in the morning then 20 mins at lunch and then another hour in the evening. At weekends we normally go working in the hills so we are normally out for about three hours a day.

Good luck!!

hi Kim

i feed all of mine on the dried food from the Natural dog food company - no hidden nasties and they use free range human grade chickens. They have added pasta or rice a few times a week, lots of veggies and some fresh fish.

If i was not such a wimpy Vegetarian they would all be on the BARF diet (w00t)

talulla tends to put weight on easily if she is off exercise with an injury but loses it easily once back to her regular exercise.

Bean as you know is a skinny thing that struggles to keep weight on so she does get extra pasta!

Ghillie the Deerhound pup is as lanky as a Deerhound pup is and my wonderful Mabel the Sprylet is as lovely and round as a Whippet puppy should be

I take them out to the forest or the beach every day for at least an hour - on sunny days like today we were at the forest for almost three hours exploring off the beaten track

they also have use of the garden all day as i work from home so they are on the go the whole time when not asleep!

if i was you i would start by not letting your kiddies give titbits - all those hidden calories :D

i personally think it is the same for dogs as us... eat good quality food in moderation and get out and exercise.

hope this helps

I personalt dont ike tined dog food at all so mine get eather a dry complet or I make my own up. if your dogs used to treets shes going to get in a strop without them so for my 2 racers i give them bits of carrott and apples as treets all mine will kill you for a carrott but more then anything else its exerscie that gets there weight down. I ahve tryed lots of differnt complet food but the only one all 9 of mine will eat well without iffy tums is gusto working dog food

wendy

I think it is defo the excerse they are lacking, i think i am lulled into a false sense of security with whippets as they are happy to sleep all day o:) -_-

i will change the diet, increase the walking and weigh every week, see how it goes
