Hi- i am a vet nurse and see a lot of breeders every week.

I have got to know one in particular, she breeds whippets as well as other breeds- in no way a puppy farmer! And i can't resist one any longer, so have asked for a dog from the best bitch next year.

All the pups she has previously brought in have looked quite solid and vary in temperament from shy to demanding!

Just generally looking for any advise- i have previously owned gsd's, labradors, weimaraner and terriers, but never a whippet.

I have decided on this breed as they seem placid, sensitive and generally not like the labs or gsds! Im looking for a more chilled k9, any advise would be lovely, maggy x

you should try contacting Mary-Caroline on here, you will find her contact if you search under her name in members.

She is a vet nurse who bought her first whippet from me a year ago. She is very chatty and will tell you all you want to know.

All the best with your future puppy, but be careful, whippets are addictive !!! :- "

Hi, welcome to K9. Great choice of dog.

Whippets are definitely chilled as adult dogs and sensitive. However, they can be very lively as pups...it takes 16-18 months before you get that really chilled whippet. Only speaking from my own experience of course. :))

I'm sure by having a good browse through this forum you'll get a better idea of what whippets are about, and see some lovely photos to boot. ;)

I'm sure you'll get lots of good advice too.

Welcome to K9. A Whippet... whatever gave you that idea

my only worry is that i have 2 indoor cats, if my pup grows up around them will they get on well? or will i have to keep them separate all times when im out? i wouldn't mind doing so,, but like the idea of them keeping each other company!x

Chatty? A polite way of saying I can't shut up? :D

Hope you're well, Firemansam. Can you believe it's been a year? Cashie had his first booster today, it was quite emotional! Are you planning to breed from Violet again? I'm feeling broody...

Maggy, I have PM'd you.

We have 2 Whippets, Zak & Edi and 2 cats India & Cefor. It took afew months for the Whippets to accept them and they where miffed that dogs had come into their territory, but in the end it worked out. The girls (cats) would cuddle up to the boys (whippets) whilst in the house, but outside was a different matter. Dogs chase cats, you just have to be sensible about it. But in saying that, we wouldn'y have had it any other way. Girls drink from boys bowls (& steal food when they are not looking !!!) Don't let it stop you, you just have to be strict with the dogs.

As Jax wisely advised, FAQ is a great source of info where old and current K9 threads have been linked especially for your perusal  I've done some scouting and found a few threads you might like to read on this subject, which are now added in to FAQ
