Gizmo got up as normal,,,right back under his snuggle bed  .

I took Gary to school, but he never met me at the door,,,different, but as I been sore,,never thought much about it.

At 11am I gave him and Rob chicken,,Robbie ate his Gizmo stuck his nose up to it,,this also normal for him. At lunch time,,he wanted out,,so I let him and Robbie out for the toilet.

When Im let them in,,Gimzo can in at 100mph,,and very skittish,,thats when I seen the blood,,,it was over the kitchen floor,,not wee tiny spots,,but little puddles,,,my heart was racing as I did not know where it came from or what dog. Robbie stood still,,no blood on him, so tried to get Gizmo to stand still and check him, as I thought he had a bad cut :( ,,no its was from his bum.

Im right on the phone to the vet,,telling her he's covered in blood,,she's trying to calm me down,,god I was shaking. I looked at his gums,,they were white,,so knew it was either shock or blood loss.

Gizmo has seen the vet, he said it sounded like Colitis,,but with the amount of blood he could have a burst ulcer. Gizmo got a jab,,with antibiotic and anti inflammitry (sp),,by the time he seen the vet he was bouncing again.

He's got tablets to take also,,twice a day. He looks fine just now, but Ive to keep a close eye on him for 24hours. He will poo blood tomorrow, but he said it should be dark blood and not to worry about it,,if he poo's the red blood he's to go into the vets and go on a drip. He's to eat more ruffage,,eg biscuits etc,,but Gizmo is fussy,,he wont eat anything like that,,Ive tried the natura yogart tonight,,he turned his nose up at it also.

He has had a little chicken,,with tablets in it and 2 Markie bicuits as he does like them,,the vet said to give him them.

The vet said all his vital organs sounded good,,so thats a good sighn,,,he's made up the blood loss as his gums were a nice pink colour, his temp was normal too,,but Im so worried as he's so fussy at eating.

Can anyone give me advice on a good quality food for him,,dont care about the price, just one that both will be heathy on,,as I will make them eat it  If its the only choice they have, they will eat it.

Just now both get chicken fillets, boiled, with pasta/brown bread,,markie treats and they have a bowl of bakers chicken dry dog food for them to eat when ever they want,,and 2 bowls of water,,fresh evey day.

Ive not to give him mince or beef as they both got this about 3 times a week,,The chicken was not on the menu on the beef days.

I hope the wee guy is fine thought the night and tomorrow,,god Im scared I might lose him,,he's my baby  God I sound like a right twat ,,but Im just a wee bit scared as never seen this amount of blood loss from a dogs bum,,and Ive had dogs a lot of years .

Right now Gizmo is under his snuggle bed and want's his mum to leave him alone as I keep checking on him and waking him up,,poor wee sole

P.S The vet is sure he's not got the nasty bug going around,,as I was worried it could be that also.

I had a dog Gideon with colitis and the only thing I could feed him was a special fish and corn diet. This calmed it down and he only had probably a couple of mild flare ups every year He was a rescue dog and had it really bad like you described when i first got him. Its very scary! Had Gideon for 13 years and it was under control and didn't cause too many problems once on the diet. Good luck am sure the whippy will get sorted.

So sorry to hear this Susan, and correct--you hav had dogs for mega years, and if you or John aint seen anything like this before THEN it is a bit worrying, we know this special wee dog will be well looked after in your house and hope u get to the bottom of the problem soon.! Scoobs & Emma

sorry to hear about GIZMO Sue hope he's soon on the way to recovery Annie had to have a special diet higher carbs and ruffage but due to her diabetes but she wouldn't touch the vet presribed food so the next best thing reccomended by the vet was tinned Chappie which is fish and cereal based with a mixer they also now do chappie in chicken/rice still cereal based. she was happy to eat this, Annie was allways fed on a complete food so I was a bit concerned if the change over might upset her stomach but she was fine. hope this helps :luck:

I notice you mention that give your dogs Bakers complete to snack on. I have to say that I wouldn't touch Bakers with a bargepole - it is full of nasties. Perhaps you could change to Burns or James Wellbeloved, which are better quality complete foods?

Sorry to hear that you are having such problems with Gizmo - hope you get to the 'bottom' of it soon!

Well it's almost 24hours since he became ill, but he looks fine today. He's still not had another poo,,not since the bloody one yesterday. He slept like a log all night -_- , I checked on him a few time's, but to make sure me was okay. He was in our room as he nomaly sleep's with Gary.

He would not eat anything this morning, but that is nomal for him, but after I got home from the school, he met me at the door and then looked at the treat's. I gave him a little chicken and he was hungry, so hid the tablet in a piece, so he's had his tablet.

I have picked up the baker's food, so he can only eat the chicken just now and going to make some pasta for him later. He does eat fish (thank's for the pm Tina), so going to buy him some and try him on it.

I will buy some tinned chappie food,,I dont think he will even look at it, but it's worth a try.

Im still scared about his next poo :( ,,incase it like the last one, but untill he goes, I will just keep biting my nails  Gizmo is laying on the sofa, he's spred out, not curled up, so his tummy must be feeling fine just now .

Thanks for everyone who has PM'd me,,some from people I dont know,,I will try other dry food,,I have tried loads with him, and bakers was the only one he would eat.

It's terrible when the dog's are ill,,they just like babies, as cant say what's wrong :(

Sorry to hear Gizmo is unwell. :( poor boy, I hope he's better soon.

Ruby and Gizmo sound exactly the same Bakers are the only biscuits Ruby actually eats and she loves Markies too. She also gets James Wellbeloved but she really just picks at them.

As you know susan when we got nemo he had a bad stomach, the vet said he had colic, we tried allsorts, fresh chicken made him worse. Tried james wellbeloved but found him great on burns. he has bakers meaty balls only as treats and his stomach is fine now. He carnt have fresh meat, just the dried biscuits. only time he suffers now is if he steals food, which he is a master at.

Ah, poor little Gizmo :(

Sounds like a good bland diet for him from now on ..... Burns is an excellent make for dry food if you want to leave a bowl down for them

I do hope he is completely back to normal very soon, Sue :)

Hi Susan , Emma here ,when our dogs dont eat certain dry foods I disolve an oxo cube in boiling water , then later pour it over once it's cooled, does the trick for Braidy! Do hope he gets better soon I know he's your baby :luck:

My youngest whippet suffers quite badly from colitis. Hills sesitive stomach suits her well & if you join Hills professional partners on line, they deliver it to your home.

So far Gizmo is still bright and has even had a little play with me :D , he's still not had another poo, dont know if this is good or bad, might phone the vet tomorrow to see if this is normal or not.

I went to tesco's for the Burns food, but could not find any :( , if he's still looking bright tomorrow, Im going to the pet shop to see if I can get it there . I did get the chappie dog food, and yes, he's not even looking at it. He's had a small meal of chicken and pasta about 4pm and ate the lot,,was also trying to eat Robbie's. So if he does not eat the small amount of Chappie by 9pm, I will give some more chicken / pasta. He's had his second tablet.

Im still scared about the next poo, just wish he would do one, so I know where we stand,,just hope there is no bright blood

Emma, ive tried the gravy on all sorts of food over the last 8 years,,since I got Robbie, he and Robbie dont like gravy's

When I get the burns food,,im going to get tough :- ,,bet it last's about 3 days

Bryn my whippet cross has colitis, he's had it since we got him at nine months and he's nearly twelve years old now.

he has occasional bouts of bright red blood and it always looks a lot worse than it actually is.

we just give him live goats milk yoghurt( syringed down his neck if he won't eat it)and some tinned chappie, sometimes he'll take the chappie and yoghurt mixed, for a few days then gradually re-introduce his normal food.

he generally recovers without need of veterinary treatment.

he used to have James Wellbeloved dry food and was on that for quite a few years vbut he seems to be able to tolerate other foods a little better as he's got older and his days on chappie are few and far between.

don't worry too much about the lack of poo, he'll go when he needs too, personally i wouldn't be too worried if i saw a little bright red blood again either, very often after the initial lots of bright blood the next normal type poo is generally very dark due to old blood but can have a slight coating of bright blood on it where it has passed through the most irritated area of intestine. usually after two /three days everything is back to normal.

Chicken and rice or chicken and pasta is great food for dogs with collitus. Also stick on the same food and dont be tempted to change about as these dogs need any new foods introduced very slowley and carefully when they have had a flare up like this.

His poor tummy and intestines must be so sore he really needs time for it all to settle he wont feel inclined to eat very much while he feels like that.

I have a whip who cannot eat wheat or rice but gets along fine on pets at homes own brand small breed dry and a little pedigree chum.

A few quick question.

Will Gizmo have this for life now. Will the blood in poo's and the huge loss of blood in the kitchen happen a few times a year/month ?

The vet never said he had this for life and if he was fine over the 24hours, he would be okay. Or maybe he never told me as I was in a bit of a state. Im scared to google this as in a way, scared incase it ment an early death, but there seem's to be a few who have what he has. I lost a whippet aged 4yrs, due to gut problems,,she never had blood in her poo,,but she had to eat the dog food from the vets for about 1 1/2yrs,,she looked great, even went a walk the evening she died,,about 1 hour after being home,,she went down hill and died at the vets. I spent over £1000 on her vet treatment and a week at the royal vet hospital in Edinburgh,,I would do the same for Gizmo,,but dont want him to be put through what Abbey went through.

Im not giving him anything else, but the chicken / pasta,,for a few days, but when I get the Burns food, I know he will just pick at it,,like he did with the bakers food.

Can Gizmo get cheese, he loves cheese. I had cheesy pasta for lunch and I gave him a few tiny bits,,not even a fork full. He likes scrambled eggs with cheese,,wont eat it without the cheese,,just trying to think of other good food other than chicken.

If the owners who have dogs with Colitis, think Im better talking to my vet,,then say so, im not caring about the vet fee's, I just want the best for Gizzy.

Oh getting the fish delived tomorrow,,just hope he like's it as he likes the fish and chip shop fish ,,Robbie wont eat fish.

Maybe a meeting with my vet is needed,,to get the diet right, but I know he wont eat the stuff from the vets,,just need a nice diet, that he likes to eat.

Im going to syringe some of the yogart down him tomorrow. I dont want to stress him out though,,so maybe twice.

If your boy has colitis the worst thing you can give him is any kind of GRAVY or red meat, it will make him 100 times worse.

Chicken is ok in small amounts but high in protein which too much can set him off again. When he is bad one of the best foods to keep him on is vet prescribed Hills i/d diet preferably the tinned variety. As he gets better i would try once a day adding a small amount of chicken to it or cooked white coley.

Steer well clear of red meat altogether & gravy mixes or oxo's contain all sorts which will just upset him further.

The natural live yoghurt will help give him a spoonful in the morning & one in the evening, most will not take this naturally you have to spoon it in their mouths.

There are a couple of remedies that you can get from the chemist when he has a bad bout which is either Gaviscon Liquid or Alludrox. Give 1 x 5ml spoonful of either, this will help settle the gut.

Most importantly get your vet to prescribe some Pred tablets, these will work wonders.

Good luck

A quick update on Gizmo.

He's not had another bloody poos since the day it happened :D . He's eating chicken, pasta, bread and fish. He is still getting markies and he's like's small bonio's (the 3 flavour kind),,he likes the lighter colour ones  . He wont even look at the tinned chappie food, so gave it to my pal. I got the burn's food,, the sensitive tummy one,,he wont look at it, but I put it down for him to graze on. He might try it.

Gizmo has put weight on about 1lb,,he got a shower today and his nails done. He's a normal bouncing boy, I hope he wont get the bloody poo again, but if he does,,back to the vet again. Gizmo is missing his little bit of sausage he used to get from me and his beef dinners as I still give Robbie hit red meat dinners. I feel rotten as Gizmo looks for the same, but I dont want to upset his tummy, so he get's boiled fish on meat days :(

Gizmo needs wormed in about 2 weeks time,,I use drontal plus,,,when is it safe to worm him ?,,I dont want to upset his tummy again. I could get another wormer if need be. I dont realy want to phone the vet as he will want to see him and get paid £££££'S for it  . He's got no sighn of worm's,,but like to do them3 times a year.

glad to hear he's on the mend think I would be inclined to skip the worming for him this time round my vet doesn't believe in worming a dog unless it is neccesarry as it can sometimes do more harm than good.
