Im hoping on going on a break to Ireland, maybe at the end of July, Ive always wanted to go and i did have Galway in mind - but after having a browse on 'Discover Ireland' website im totally confused as to where to go now!

Will only be going for a long weekend ( fri, sat , sun) so wont have time to fit loads in and dont really want to be rushed off our feet anyways, I want to go somewhere basically thats got some traditional pubs, a few cafes, shops, etc but really want to go for the scenery too! So someplace with a good mix of the above would be super, Not too busy but not too desolate either! (w00t) As galway is a city im thinking it might be too hectic now after looking at the website, but id love to visit connemara but dont know how far this is away if we stayed in Galway?? :b

Geography was never my strongest subject! :teehee:

Hope some of you Irish guys and gals can help !!!!!

Many thanks in advance  :huggles:

im pretty sure its west Ireland i want to be going to so theres a start!

You want to be going to Co Fermanagh, the lake's up there are a sight, and there is any amount of pup's and b&b,caravan park's,with all amenities,+camping n stuff. It is about the nicest county in ireland ,and im not being biest just cause its N.Ireland.Check out Castle Archdale, and all the surrounding lake;s,ie,upper & lower lough Erne. with all the watersport's n stuff.Everything you could want and more.+ dog's are no problem, with mile's of forrest walk's and loads of wildlife.Cycle hire, boat hire, you name it.Anyway ,check it out. ...Billy...

I just got back from a week in County Kerry with the whippets. It was perfect walking country - absolutely stunning scenery - beaches, mountains and lakes. I think it is probably the most unspoilt part of Ireland. We stayed in a tiny village about 10 miles out of Kenmare (plenty of pubs, shops etc)

I highly recommend it - only downside is that it takes 3 1/2 hours to get there once you get off the ferry. :( THey didn't mind, but if you are only going for a weekend, it's a lot of travelling.

I've been fortunate enough to travel with work to every county in Ireland, i can strongly recommend getting a blindfold, a map and a pin!! If you stick any major cites on your 1st go (Belfast, Dublin, Cork, Galway, Derry, Sligo, Limerick) try again.....its pretty hard to go wrong no matter where you go. In fact it would probably be easier to list the places not worth going to!! My personal favs are Waterford, Kenmare (as already posted) and just about anywhere in Norn Iron. Whatever you decide, enjoy the craic. :luck:

oooo, im still confused  so the general feeling is Northern ireland may be best?

Rach - Kerry sounds lovely, just what im looking for but i think you might be right in that its too much travelling just for 3 day break :( We where planning on flying though, not ferry. Can you fly to kerry  ?

edited to say not taking the whippys on this occasion

Pretty certain that there is an airport at Cork, which is only about an hour and a bits drive away.

It's such a lovely place and Kenmare is great for pubs and restaurants and still in a really lovely location.

- I've just had a quick look and you can get really cheap flights from Birmingham to Cork with BMI baby - might be worth a look!

You CAN fly to Kerry as it has its own airport near Farranfore, about half an hours drive (If even that) north of Killarney.

County Kerry is a great place to visit..........lots of the Irish and quite a few English dog show folk can be found there the third week in August each year on 'the Munster circuit' ..........which is 4 dogs shows within a week.

WHEREVER YOU DECIDE TO GO HAVE A GREAT TIME

Billyboy45 - think we are going last weekend in July

Good luck with your Irish holiday  my hubby works for an Irish firm so we are invited over there every Christmas (hubby goes more often than that though- he was there a couple of weeks ago)

We try and visit new places when we go over (usually limited to the North of Ireland so far) but there are some lovely little places to visit. I would love to visit more of the South someday. Eniskillen is a beautiful place and Omagh too... weve also visited Lurgan, Craigavon, Banbridge and Portadown round those areas..

Im not sure what al the fuss is about Dublin, Im not that keen (sorry folks) ... but much prefer the city of Belfast ... its a great city.

Dublin is a total nightmare as far as driving goes.No green, green amber ,and then red, or red,red amber, and then green. It's just red, green,or green ,red, and if you're not quick enough,it's red ,bump,or green, bump.Take you're pick. ...Billy...

I havnt received your pm for some reason - will you try again please. :)

I have to say I'm totally in love with Fermanagh. I lived there for a few years when I used to work with the horses.

Castle Archdale is lovely (my first job was there taking out pony treks) as is Florence Court (where I'm holidaying this year). If you do go there is a lovely Bistro in Black Lion that you HAVE to try out, foodie heaven. Fermanagh is beautiful anywhere you go in it...... as I said, I'm in love with the place!

There are lots of lovely places around Galway that you could stay, perhaps travelling into the city for a day rather than stopping there. Big cities are way to hectic for me. It's been so long since I've been down that way I can't remember exact places or names to recommend. (I'm actually heading down that way for a weekend in July as well for a wedding.)
