Hi there,

We went to the Vet today with Misty(our jack russel x)...she started to shake her head a lot last Wednesday evening..first I thought something had stung her...it did get better each day, and now she seems to be fine...but to be on safe side, we took her to the vet today just to check her ear. The vet said she has grass seed in her ear and need to be sedated to take it out (she tried to remove it but Misty was mooving too much).

My question would be whether there is other way to take the seed out - a drops or any liquid..I am just not very happy about the sedating her as there is some risk involved.

Did anyone have similar experience?...any advice/help would be much appreciated..I don't know what to do...Misty seems to be fine a the moment...very lively and happy as usual, but the vet suggested the seed need to be taken out asap...I am just not happy about the sedation thing...

Thank you very much in advance for any advice..

Maria

It's quite common and in most cases vets prefer to remove the seeds under sedation as the grass seeds have little barbs on them which can be very uncomfortable for the dog when it's being removed. grass seeds as with any foriegn object needs to be removed asap. I wouldn't worry at all about your dog being sedated at least your vet did try without sedating your dog alot wouldn't even try.

please let us know how she gets on

My mother-in-law used to have spaniels, she too had problems this time of the year with grass seeds (Darts)& whenever one of them got problems with their ears it was almost always a grass dart,& they was always sedated with no probs :) )whenever she came round she always inspected the garden for these grasses & usually done a bit of weeding for us

They are a pain  Im sure your dog will be fine at the vets

I've had this happen twice to whippets. Penny was very stoic & brave & kept still while Julie the wonder Vet took it out. Feather wasn't so brave & wiggled & cried so the vet (Julie wasn't on that day) had to sedate her. Not full blown anaesthetic just something to relax her. He said it was just enough to relax a small cat....it totally knocked her out & when he gave her the antidote he said she should wake up in a few minutes. Half an hour later I carried her out to the car, she is only a little thing & it really had an effect on her.

We take grass seeds out of ears on a regular basis under sedation with no problems at all, dont worry i'm sure she will be fine..horrible things grass seeds.

Hello,

Many thanks for your replies...

Misty is now back to normal, she had grass seed removed yesterday morning under sedation (I was more stressed than she was, poor little thing). I just can not believe how such big and spiky seed can get so deep in the ear...awful stuff...!
