Have a 5 month old whippet bitch, she is lovely apart from the fact that she is completely obsessed with food!! She eats her dinner in seconds, then hoovers the floor and with follow the children around and has been known to swipe anything from them!! Any help would be appreciated as the breeder told us that they are not a greedy breed!

Only 5 months old - that means you're having an easy time of it right now

Whippets are consummate thieves! It will be the best lesson ever for your kids as they will soon learn to sit down to eat and to keep everything out of whippet reach

Oh, and don't forget that a whippet is more than capable of jumping straight up onto the kitchen counter - they are almost part cat (w00t)

Worth remembering .................

agree totally with everything everyone has said, the whippet is 'THE' most silent thief ever. they will steal anything that remotely edible.

For as much as they are thieves tho they make up for in love, affection, company and they are the best friends ever.

Welcome to K9 and please enjoy your whippet (thieving and all!)

Totally agree with all of the above. I have one just over 4 months and I'm still feeding him 3 times a day to make sure he isnt genuinely hungry, as opposed to being a whippet and stealing what he can - he doesnt *really* have to eat my shoes, honest :clown:

Nahhhhhhhhh.......

Mine are all angels and good as gold..... :- "

o:) o:) o:)

I lied too........... they are the biggest thieves on four legs...

I wish Diva would eat her food in seconds!!! She just picks at it....unless it's a treat like a piece of sausage or liver or biscuit in which case it doesn't hit the sides going down!!! (w00t)

i shouldnt laugh but i think its quite apt that Faith pinched two of the other halfs pieces of bread off his table as he was eating tonight.

it really infuriates him so when they thieve or beg......

They don't mean to thieve...they just think everything in the world belongs to them...just as they think everyone in the world loves them....they're just that kind of up front, straight forward breed....you leave things where thay can get them and they will...

I just popped out to the shop, less than 10 minutes and a whole new bag of dog biscuits Gone...not a crumb left

...and Foxglove...you need to get another...bit of competition...

I would have another TOMORROW if I had my way!!! :- "

I think we've just 'spoilt' Diva a touch over the past week or so as I cooked some sausages and some lambs liver as a training treat for her and we :b ...ahem, mixed a little bit in with her dry food and now she EXPECTS it all the time :- "

We are being firm though....it was a just a little hiccup on our part and now we are insisting that she eats her proper dog food first and only has treats when being trained and when out on a walk and she is good - coming back, letting us wipe her feet clean etc :)) We are also NOT leaving the food down all day so she can pick at it :b It's put down and she has 30 minutes to eat her fill or it gets taken away until next mealtime! I think a rumbling tummy will soon make her change her ideas about being picky! :- " She may be Diva by name but I'm certainly not putting up with Diva by nature!!! (w00t)

Diva has cured both Neil and I of an annoying habit though......we were forever leaving empty sweet wrappers and stuff in the door compartments of the car and we left Diva for just two minutes whilst we popped into a shop for a couple of things and when we came out she was shredding a mars bar wrapper to lick it out!!! We now, religiously, never put anything into the doors for her to find anymore! :p
