Hi folks needing some advice please. I have been recommended green lipped Russell as a wonder for helping dogs with arthritis. A local dog walker told me the change in her arthritic lab was nothing short of a miracle. It's a herbal formula. My question is how much can I safely give to my 12kg acorn terrier who is 13? They come in powder form in a capsule each capsule being 500mg. By the way I've checked out research on green lipped Russell for dogs and lots of owners are hailing it as miraculous!

Green lipped mussel is one on the main ingredients (may actually be the main ingredient I cant remember) in "Yu-Move" supplement which has been tested and approved for dogs, it has some very good reviews from people including 2 of the girls I work with who's elderly arthritic dogs are both much improved after a few months on it. I don't know the dose rate off the top of my head but either buy Yu-Move for your dog or read the guidelines /data sheet for it and it will give you a dose for your size of dog. Its available through your vets or online from most of the pet supply stores, the cheapest I saw it for was Amazon (£34.95 for 300 tablets) so its worth shopping around. I think you give a double dose for 6 weeks then reduce it to a maintenance amount depending on your dogs weight so for a 12kg dog 300 tablets would last you quite a while. If I were you I would only buy Greenlipped Mussel Extract which is specifically designed for dogs. There is usually a guidance on them of how much you should feed daily.

I can advice you Yumove as well as 'Get Up and Go Glucosamine' by DinDins (which I slightly prefer as it's powder form and also contains other good stuff such as Glucosamine, Chondroiting and MSM which are all good for joints).

I've never fed green lipped mussel to a dog but i've heard its in lots of horse joint products. a friend of mine has had her working lab on Mobility from Natural VetCare for a few months now, its not been out for long so lots of people haven't heard of it, she got it from pets at home. They do a version for small older dogs too which would prob be better for your terrier, she said it comes in pellets and smells quite strong but her dog loves it! Its got the glucosamine, chondroitin and msm that you need in a joint product.

I started giving my field spaniel bitch yu movefrom the age of 7. She has no arthritis at the age of 10. Who knows whether it has prevented it ? Or is it nature versus nurture?

I use Yumove on my 12 year old arthritic whippet and it is wonderful, he has 2 a day and everyone comments on how well he is.
