Hello all

I would like to introduce myself and ask for your help.

As you all may know Independant Greyhound Racing has suffered some extremely bad press recently - some justified and some not.

There are a group of us that would like to work with the tracks and the welfare groups to form a comittee and some sort of "Flappers Charter" to try and help the sport move forward. This would cover all issues of welfare, rehoming, vets at tracks etc

It has been suggest that we look to the whippet fraternity for ideas and suggestions so here I am asking for help

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas of things that we can take from your "world" into ours then it would be highly appreciated.

Whippet racing does not have the adverse publicity that greyhound racing does so help me to understand why and how we can adopt your ideas before its too late.

Any constructive critisism is also welcome - I am not naive enough to think that all greyhound people are above critisism or the law - this is why we want to help move the sport forward.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Wendy :huggles:

i think thats a wonderful idea.i think the main reason whippet racing doesnt suffer with a bad image is cos theres no money involved in it simple as that!cos theres no money, folk arent attracted to it as a business scheme but as a hobby and the vast majority of dogs are kept by their owners till they die.theres no syndicates and no professional racing kennels where dogs are sent by their owners to race and win money.i may be wrong but i think a lot of folk will agree with this

I think you summed that up perfectly Kris

:) yes that about say it all dogs are for life

The main reason for the differance in the way whippet & Greyhound racers are seen is that whippets are bought/bred as pets that also race if they get injured or when they get old they are kept on as pets.

Greyhounds on the other hand are bred to race nothing more nothing less if they get injured they are nearly always past on (OR PTS) when they get old they are nearly always passed on (or PTS)

thats the main differance between whippet & Greyhound racing and probably why whippet racing is seen in a better light than greyhound racing.

When i first got into the flapping side of Greyhounds (1987) it was very much working class men who had probably progressed from Whippet racing (like my family) and i must say almost all did keep the dogs til their natural end.

Now when i go to flapping, there are still the 'old school' old geezers who race as a hobby still and probably have all the oldies at home by the fire (i personally know a few that fit this category) but there are also the cheating NGRC trainers, knackering up dogs for a 'gamble' and encouraging dog people into thier webs.

Im all for some kind of regulatory body to protect the sport.

If Whippet racing did have a massive publicity campaign, maybe it would also attract the wrong kind of press, after all there are still unscrupulous Whippet breeders/owners.

Whippet racing is primarily a sport for people who love whippets and want a bit of fun. Greyhound racing is an industry which revolves around making money.

Hard to see how they can be compared, really.

Sorry I have had to press reply as I don't know how to get a new box up lol

I really appreciate all your comments and totally agree that the main difference is the whole gambling aspect of it.

Keep you comments coming - do you have to register ownership of your dogs to a main body at all?
