This is just the dogs from one area and a very small proportion of the real problem :(

Unfortunately I know of one pounds that gets so many greyhounds handed in they don't even bother trying to rehome, they put them to sleep straight away.

It's great when individual trainers/owners take the responsibility of rehoming their dogs, or at least making sure they go to a rescue, but the bottom line is that greyhounds are bred in such vast numbers there will never be enough pet homes for all the retired/failed dogs.

if the home youre on about is the one on the east lancs road then yes youre right they put them to sleep straight away.they dont even bother to try to rehome them.despite all the denials in the press recently.our local council sends all their strays there too.at least they get a few days before theyre pts.and yes i can understand galty saying not all of these dogs are strays from being dumped some have been rehomed and they have then strayed.but id love to see what proportion of them were rehomed that strayed.somehow i dont think it will be in the high figures. :(

Yes, that's the one I'm thinking of Kris.

I feel sorry for any dog that lands up there, but the poor greys don't stand a chance. The people who hand them in know full well waht will happen to them as well, but the hand in fee is less than getting a vet to put to sleep :(

well i guess they can ease their conscience by saying they made sure it went to a good home or that they didnt put their dog to sleep they made sure it was rehomed.(if you say it often enough youll start to believe it) truth is they know whats going to happen to their dog when they leave, but they just dont care.if they did they wouldnt take it there in the first place.still i suppose theyre better than the ones who do the D.I.Y. jobbies with the staple and nail gun or spade :(

which are the biggest cowards i wonder? the ones who do the DIY jobbies or the ones who leave a dog there and so dont have to watch and see what happens

Do remember this "rescue" from a couple of years ago.

After the stink that was raised they said that they would not take anymore Greyhounds.

Think I remember that Lisa had a protest outside and rescued 3 whippets that where to be put down.

Had thought this Hell Hole had shut.

Are they taking Greyhounds again?.

tbh im not sure if they do they are still open ive just come past there and theres loads of cars in the car park.i go past there every tuesday going to manchester and its usually very busy then.if i remember rightly tuesdays was the day the grey people used to take their dogs in to be pts?im friendly with our local dog warden kieron hes a good customer of ours so ill ask him he will probably know.whether they do still take them or not im not sure but somehow i dont think they will advertise the fact after all the fuss last time :- " tbh i worry about this.cos if they no longer take in greys to be pts where do they go now?have the numbers of greys being dumped in the area risen since they have stopped taking them?or is it business as usual?do they take them to a vets now to be pts or to another home?

Unfortunatly this is a huge problem, I am a volunteer for Kerry Greyhound Connection, and we home Ex irish Hounds.. Many of which would have been shot, hung or even worse ended up in Spain !!!!

They make the most fantastic pets, and 35,000 a year dont even make the track so where do they go ??? Dont even think about it.... of the 10,000 that make the track thier fate is also uncertain, The RGT takes dogs that have raced on offical tracks but the ones that dont.... who knows what happens to them,

The poor irish hounds dont even have the RGT !!! Thats why we try and help

We bring over the dogs , and place them in foster homes, where they are neutered, vacinated etc, and begin thier change from number to pet dog !! We cat test, small dog test etc.

well Kieron our dog warden came into our shop today(i emailed him) and told me that leigh dogs home dont take greyhounds any more.also they are no longer allowed to put dogs to sleep, this now has to be done by a vet.i dont know if this is good or bad news tbh.if they no longer take them where do they end up now? :( as the grey people took them there cos it was cheaper than taking them to a vet to be pts i wonder what they do to avoid paying vets bills?do they kill them themselves or what?anyone know?he broke my heart today by bringing in some pics of an 8 year old dobermann bitch calledd Lady who was found in the woods near our house, starved, beaten and she was in a terrible state could hardly stand.they he showed me pics of her in the 2 weeks hes had her(he wouldnt take her to leigh dogs home which is where all the strays from our area end up)he took her home with him and nursed her back to health.she put weight on and is a different dog. :) there was a feature about her in our local papers cos she was in such a state.many people called offering a home for her.Kieron took her to her new forever home today and shes landed on her feet poor girl.nice soft quilt and bed and living in the house where he assures me she will be absolutely ruined.for every cruel owner theres one to take a dog in and give it a lovely home
