Frankie has got a patch on his tail where the hair has come off. It's about a third of the way down from the top.

The skin is not red or itchy, i've never seen him bite at it, he hasn't got fleas or mites. Juley mentioned 'Stud Tail'.

I am concerned that this patch will get bigger and it is obvious now. Does anyone know what it is and how i can get the hair to grow back?

I dont know if its hormonal with boys Jok but my girls sometimes get that after they have had a season but it goes back to normal after a little while :thumbsup:the hair doesn't actually come off but looks like it is singed(sp) same place though

I don't know about 'stud tail' as I have seen some bitches with it!!

There is a gland in the tail at that point but I don't know why some go bald, the only time one of mine had it was Frankie when he was at his worst with his Cushings disease but once he was diagnosed and prescribed Vetoryl, all his hair started to grow back, including the bald bit on his tail although this was the last place to re-grow and my Vet thought it might never!!

Not much help to you but maybe, as it is a gland, a hormone imbalance but it does not seem to affect the dogs that have it.

Nana has the same thing, it is where she sits on her tail, especially in the car for some reason. It started the winter before last and then got a lot worse this winter, but has suddenly started to get better, and I have absolutely no idea why.

My blue bitch Gracie gets a small bald patch on her tail starting around February every year & then it grows back. Because Gracie has dark blue hair I can see as soon as the new hair begins to grow. However as Frankie has a white tail you will not see the new growth so easily.

Don't worry it should grow back :luck: But it will probably happen every year

The oil I couldn't remember the name of was "Ekoneem". I have never used it myself but read it is very good.

I noticed this type of thing on someone else's dog. A vet friend told me that it was to do with the gland that is there.

NEEM is an ecellent remedy for skin irritations. You can get it in many forms ........ cream, soap etc.. I use it myself as well as for the dogs.

molly gets a baldy patch every time she molts,it just looks scruffy, but doesnt last long.

Flyn has it too, tried all sorts, but the hairs never grown back!

If you trawl through the international whippet board you'll find that it is commonly called stud tail (even though it occurs equally in dogs and bitches). Savannah's recently developed one again for the first time in a few years.

As others have said it's associated with a gland in the area and oversecretion of that gland. You can help it by just washing it with soap and water, or by using something like Oxy10 (the zit cream), but it will still take a while for the hair to grow back.

It's just somethign that seems to happen to some dogs, so don't worry about it too much. There's plenty in the ring with it. :)

Dont wprry about it JO , it wont take away from Frankies `handsomeness   Mayzee has has a bald spot on her tail all her life . :D

Thanks for the tips. I had noticed quite a few others at shows with it.

I know it doesn't bother him at all, i am probably being a bit selfish because i was worried that it might effect him 'in the ring'. :b
