Oh my god I am so shocked because this is the vets which I go to  I am absolutely appalled by this. As soon as I get home tonight I am going to ring them up and tell them where they can go!!!!

Some of you will already know that I have been upset by these vets in the past when I took my guinea pig in (Pickle is still going strong by the way :) ). So they have my custom no more. Too many locum vets who don't give a damn.

I also know the guy at Whitehall dog rescue, Brian. I walk past the rescue every night and always see the dogs playing in the fields. He has had a lot of trouble in the past with some village residents and planning permission for new kennels. A very caring man

So was it Brian who got the cash together Helen?

It was Brian doing the appeal for the cash on Look North, so I'm guessing there is alot of dog lovers out there willing to help Cassie out...UNLIKE THE VETS.

fingers crossed for a speedy recovery

and a nice new home

I thought people might like to know, I went round to see Brian last night to take a donation for Cassie  apparently she had just had an operation and it was touch and go, her heart stopped when she was under anaesthetic but they managed to revive her and fix her leg. Although, as the infection is quite bad they might not be able to save the leg :( so fingers crossed everyone :luck:

I didn't phone the vets last night, but I don't think I want to go there anymore - not just because of this, I had already told John a few months back that I wanted to change after some trouble I had with a vet not wanting to treat my guinea pig :(

I understand that they have a business to run but you would hope that their love of animals might make them want to help out in Cassies case. However, I don't even know half the story so I don't think I can comment further, I just think I will go back to my old vets - a bit further away but very caring :)

After all this, I got back last night to find Lennys vaccination reminder on my doorstep

if it was me id phone and let them know i was changing vets and why.otherwise they wont know that it was the publicity over this case that made you rethink which vets to take your dogs to.and then they might rethink their policy about only treating animals that have owners who can pay.our vets treat lots of animals and oaps dogs either for free or at a greatly reduced rate. :) it would worry me that my vet was so money orientated as to refuse to treat a sick animal like this.surely with all the money a vet surgery makes they can afford to treat the odd emergency case for free? :(

Yes I will ring because it is not just this case that has made me dislike going there, other things that have affected me personally. I thought the same as you about treating the odd emergency case for free, the only reason that I didn't want to comment any further is because the surgery is actually a 24hr emergency surgery as well as a normal vet practice so I don't know if they do treat some cases for free, just not this one - for whatever reason. Does that make sense

What I will say is that they seem to have a high turnover of vets so there must be something that they don't like about working there :(

Its good new that Cassie's had her treatment but its sad about her leg...especally since she might not have gotten such a bad infection if she had had the treatment sooner.

I honestly don't think they would do emergency treatment for free Lucy cos when I took Inca late on last Sunday night they phoned me back to make sure I understood the consult would be £98 and could I pay it.

I know I thought that too about the infection, Brian said that they estimated that the poor dog had been lying by the railway for 24 hours :( I did get the impression though that she wasn't left without treatment at the vets - Brian wouldn't do that, he would find the money from somewhere :D

good for you Jezza!hope they will take note that theyre going to lose clients over this. :) cant believe that any vet who after all is trained to help animals and relieve pain and suffering would be as harsh about this case. :( in my vets ive seen little old ladies bring dogs and cats in with problems that i know would cost a fair bit to get sorted and my vet has just charged them 20 or 30 quid, and ive thought what a nice man,im glad hes my vet :huggles:

On another forum a little while back a person had a 6 month old GSD. The dog started being violently sick one evening, when it got to about 10 oclock she phoned her vet, the vet said that unless she had 95 pounds cash he would not see the dog, they would have to bring the dog in 'normal' consultation hours the following morning.

They did not have the cash available and the dog died in the early hours of the morning.

When they went in the vets the following day it transpired that the vet would not have treated the dog for anything (it was possibly bloat) unless they had produced 1,000 up front!! Did not matter if the dog was insured!!

This vet was a 24 hour emergency vet and other practices in the area use them as cover over nights.

It is worth checking your vet out as to their policies if you need an emergency vet, lots of vets nowadays use other practices for out of hours and you need to find out if they demand payment up front and be prepared for it.

If you have a good vet stick with them!!! and let them know they are appreciated!

I was really upset when I read this and just wanted to say that if anyone is visiting Bolton that my vet is excellent, 24 hour cover, hospital etc. They are very gentle with the dogs and the fees are fair. They are called Regan tel 01204-309745.

I am not a vet!! veteran maybe!

I am new here but I had the pleasure of walking around Brian's field with the beautiful Cassie today and she is a delightful girl. It always amazes me how dogs bounce back from such horrific situations and remain placid and friendly.

With regards to the emergency vets - no offence to those of you who have had bad dealings with them but I have always found them to be really good. My dog swallowed two whole strips of nicotine chewing gum last year and had to have his stomach pumped  I didnt have enough cash on me at the time and they still treated him, perhaps I was lucky? I have been a few times since for one thing and another and they have always been the same. Sorry to hear about everyone elses bad experiences though. The good thing is that Cassie is so well and looking beautiful, she has eyes to die for. Lets hope she finds the loving home she truly deserves  Brian is a wonderful person and he will make sure she goes somewhere safe xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

hiya sarah, where are you from? I am from east ardsley, just up the road from Brians. I am unsure about the vets now, we have had good service from them but I had a bad guinea pig experience! Have you been going there long?

Hiya,

I am in Rothwell just down the road from you. I have taken my dogs to them for about 6 years in total :) I used another vet before but always felt uncomfortable. We are practically neighbours :D

We nearly bought a house in Rothwell before we moved here :D is there a branch of the vets in Rothwell? We go to the one in Morley. To be honest I've never had any problems with them with the dogs, just the rodents, perhaps they prefer dogs! I am thinking of going back to my old vets (Beechwood if you've heard of them?), they were always good, even with my mice, but they don't have long opening times.

What dogs have you got? Were you thinking of rehoming Cassie? I would love to, she is beautiful, but we're not really able to take another dog on yet unfortunately :(

Hi, I have heard of Beechwood - they are good, used to use them a long time ago. I have a Labrador ( who is very ill at the moment and might have to be pts tomorrow :( :( :( and a Lurcher. I would love to re-home Cassie but need to concentrate on the Lab at the mo'. Wish him luck tomorrow xxxxxxxxxxx
