do you have a whippet with a heart murmer?

how has it affected your dog?

how old was your dog when you found out it had a heart murmer?

My show bred has a grade 3 heart murmur that was picked up when she was 5 years old ........Even though it's a bad murmur now, it hasn't changed Joanna's quality of life :)

Hi snapdog not heard of heart murmer in whippets but once bought a bullmastif bitch puppy after a couple of weeks i noticed she was not making the progress i expected so took her to the vet on examination the vet said she had a heart murmer he said one of the valves going to the heart was leeking & if the puppy did live would only have a very short life full of bad health we decided to end her suffering and put her to sleep :( the vet said it was quite common in this breed due to there size in comparison with there hearts

If you look on the FAQ section there is some info under Macey's heart murmer

My dog Shane developed a heart murmer and lived to the ripe old age of 18 :)

my freind had a lovely rescued red brindle whippet and he had a heart murmer, but sadly he had his yearly booster on a saturday morning then on a sunday morning he died during his sleep on their bottom of their sleep :( he was eight yrs old.it was a terrible shock for them.

My old whippet Chip also had a heart murmur - only picked up when he was 9 years old after having major surgery (it was actually a leaky heart valve). He lived till 12 and half but that had nothing to do with the murmur - he could do anything before having to have the surgery, which was due to a dog attack :(

Also Vet thought my youngest god now 5 months had one at his last check up - but will check him again betwen 6-8 months, so see if its any slighter or any worse.

Apparently my friend is a vet and he says its hard to tell properly with whippets beause of their deep chest cavity, sometimes they need checking again.

My first whippet had a heart murmur. It didn't seem to affect him at all. We didn't race or hunt with him, but he was a normally active dog. When he was about 9 years old he was hit by a car - at a corner going slow so the damage wasn't very severe. The driver took me and the dog up to the nearby veternary college and the examining vet noticed the murmur and called the students in to have a listen through a stethoscope. He said the dog probably was born with the slight murmur. That dog lived to near 14 years old and didn't have any other heart problems but had very bad kidneys in his last years.

Try searching there's been loads of posts regarding heart murmers

MIGHT BE A GOOD FAQ HELEN
