We have a few hounds that live outside (well not "outside" )

we converted our brick garage and fitted double glazed doors etc, and made a sleeping den for the doggies. and this weekend we are going to clean aout and do a little up-grade,double skin areas etc, and make it more cozy.

i want to fit a safe heater, that wont cost me ££££$$$$$$$$$ TO RUN????

any ideas? i did buy one of those hang on the wall frost watch type from wickes a few years ago and it was pants.

ive been looking at those tube type on ebay they look safe but it dosnt say how expensive it will be?

We have one of these in the budgie hut (we keep birds as well as dogs) and yes they do worki but are very hot to the touch when on. In the kennels we have the big heater lamps or pig lamps they are sometimes called over the beds and they work but are not cheap to run, hope this helps.

hi those tub heats are great as we had one for our harris hawk to help keep him warm though winter. i know alot of people use these with there birds of prey and they say they are very cheap to run i also think they are cheap to run.

Ive used these in my kennels for the past 20 years they are excellent and cheap to run

We use one of these with a infra red bulb in it  and seem cheap to run  in fact, I've got a spare one, see me at Highgate next week if your intrested.

we do have one of those with the infra lamp in, and its quite new too, but ours dosnt seem to give out much heat? Its one of the best makes and the bulb we bought was twice as much as the standard bulbs and it still dosnt seem to give you much heat?

We used to use with with the GSD pups and pigs .....and im sure that they were hotter than mine is?

hence why i wanted to find another source of heat.

p.s - just heard it might be snowing from next week! (w00t)

Similar set up to you by the sounds of it. We got Hanson Garages to fit a hardstanding garage minus the garage door. We use oil filled radiators via surge protection sockets and (I think it's called an RCD? board) that shuts the power down if anything went wrong. The dogs can't get at the radiators as they're in the corridor.

If your doing an overhaul, I'd recommend Kingspan insulate panels, whilst not cheap, insulating does save on heating costs. We used them to create a false ceiling so it's warm in winter but there's air circulating above when it's hot in summer.

We also got asphalters in to do the flooring. We told them our requirements and they made a non-permeable floor surface that we can mop through but it isn't slippy for their paws. It also has the advantage in that it doesn't get damp or hold smells too.

Not that they spend much time in their mind!! :b
