Hello
I had a dog when i was a child but have only got round to being able to have a dog now in later life.
I'm a bit of a beginner I suppose and thought I'd join this forum and get a few good tips etc..to prepare me for the responsibility of dog ownership.
I'm going to look around the forum and get to know it and may well post up a few questions.

Welcome :) Is there already a pup with your name on it, or are you still in the planning stages?

Welcome. How sensible of you to do your research first. Tell us what you do and don't want from your dog, because different breeds present different aspects. For instance, how do you feel about breeds that need a lot of coat care, big dogs, small dogs, slobbery dogs, those that need a lot of exercise, and so on.

Hello Judy
Thank you for replying to my post. I'm still in the planning stages and am really wanting a rescue dog. I like retrievers but this does not matter as I would rather have an unwanted dog.
I suppose that could make things a bit trickier. My house isnt huge so I think probably a terrier sort of size. I have forests and fields near me so the walking aspect is fine.

Hello Hemlock, thank you for replying to my post. I'm a bit tricky I'm afraid as I want a rescue dog. I like retrievers but the rescue thing is more important. I'd be looking at a medium to small size dog as my house isnt huge. The walking aspect is fine as I have forest and fields very close. I dont think I'd like a lot of coat care but if theres a dog that really really needs a home that has long hair then i would take it but I think that there should be a fair amount to choose from if i use Battersea.

Have you considered a Staffie? There are loads in rescues, and most are really sweet-natured, cracking dogs.

If you're close to Battersea, maybe you could volunteer to help there, and get to know the staff and the dogs. A good rescue will always go out of their way to find a good match, so will also want to get to know you.

Everyone is a beginner at some point, great that you're doing your research first
