Lily is just beautiful! What a gorgeous little face!
I have two whippets and one cat - they muddle along ok, but I must say that I keep a close eye on them when they're in close proximity! A lot depends on the cat - my old KitKat (who I lost last year at the grand old age of 19) was fine when we got Spooky as a pup - she even taught him to use her litter tray which came in quite handy when the weather was bad and he refused to go outside  . My other cat Mystic is a different kettle of fish. It took her a few years to get used to Spooks, but when Scout joined us last year, she pretty much accepted her, as long as Scout didn't try and take liberties with her tail :D Spooky is actually scared of Mystic (she has a mean left hook), and will howl for someone to rescue him if he's stuck upstairs and Mogs is sitting on the stairs blocking his descent. Scout has yet to learn manners around Mogs, but we're getting there!
Hi Terry!

Thankyou. My cat 'Ole' (pronounced Ollie - it's a football thing, blame DH!) is 10 now and he did know out old terrier who was a little devil! So far he doesn't seem too bothered about her, unles he has to run the gauntlet for the cat flap when she is shut in the kitchen! He tucks his tail up all the time now though instead of letting it hand down... he's not daft!

Beautiful girly pup :))

Re:cats..

My cat was 13 when we got our two whippets as pups so they have grown up with him. He gave them the odd swipe when they were little (supervise though -cat claws + puppy eyes = not good) and now has learned not to run as they will chase in order to play. However, the whippets did learn 'leave' as a command very early so this is what we use if they get too playful near him. As well as what others have said, I read somewhere that if you do things like feed the cat before the dog, carry the cat and make a fuss of him etc they will learn that he is part of your pack just as the humans are and will respect him.

Having said this, I have no doubt mine would chase to kill any cat we met outside if they were off lead, judging by the way they rear up and bark in a weird high pitch when they see a cat they can't get to!

Good luck with your puppy :))

What an adorable wee puppy - she's gorgeous  I have two whippets and a cat (Hoshi, the cat was here first). They get on ok - Hoshi just keeps out of Blue and Alfie's way and gives them a dirty look most of the time though lol.

Hi PaulaWelcome to K9. Lilly is beautiful. I love the photo of her with your little one. They are lovely together
Thanks - I see you have a lovely Lilly too! Gorgeous! x

Hi Etsy, it's a good idea to give the cat lots of fuss in front of pup. I just have to get cat to stay in the room long enough!! Haha!! Upstairs is out of bounds to Lily so the cat has some space that is just his, think it's only fair being as he has been here for so long first off. x

There's been alot of dirty looks going on - from the cat to me too as if to say 'what have you done mum??' x

Hi Paula

I am also a new whippet owner (well, december) and I was really worried about the cat thing too having heard horror stories about whippets eating the family moggie etc etc. However, as you can see my two little whips get on fine with my 3 cats!

They occasionally have little 'forgets' but there is never any malice in it- they just want to play. The siamese are so tolerant- they are 18 years old and have seen it all!

They are amazing little dogs and I am a true convert now!

Awww look at that little face, she is adorable! You have a very beautiful little whippet girl :huggles:

Oh Laura - what gorgeous pics!! That really gives me hope, your cats look so well for 18 too. Would love to see Lily and Ole curled up together. You would think that one furry body is much like another so I just have to fool her into thinking he is really another whippet!

Thanks Sarah! Likewise, so do you with the lovely Penny... xx

Hi, Welcome to K9, Lilly is gorgeous.

I have 3 whippets and 3 cats which all get along fine- cats are the boss, no questions asked (w00t)

This doesnt extend to outsider cats though- I have no doubt at all that they would kill somebody elses cat outside

We also keep guinea pigs for the children which are kept well away from the whippies at all times!!!

Hi pippywhippet

What a lovely photo, would love it if my 2 would curl up like that! Thanks for the welcome and the reassurance!
