Hello! My husband and I are in our sixties and have always owned GSD’s in the past. We lost our last beautiful dog at 13 yrs old 8 months ago and missed having a dog in our lives so much, we decided to bite the bullet and found a wonderful beagle breeder to get a new puppy from. Had him from 8 weeks, and he’s now 12 weeks old, due his final jab today then can start going outside for walkies in another week. Must admit, although we’ve raised puppies before, got all the equipment and knew what we would be in for, the reality is, for some reason, way more harder and exhausting than I anticipated!
Looking forward to getting tips and sharing with others on this site!

Hello and welcome. Puppies are hard no matter how many times we've had them, but you'll get there. Beagle mindset is way different from GSD, so it'll be a steep learning curve, but we are here to help, so don't hesitate to ask about anything.

Thank you for your response Must admit, I get a bit nervous about people’s response when I say we’ve got a beagle! Took our Snoopy to the vets today for his final jab and health check and even she put the heebie jeebies up me when she kept saying beagles are ‘challenging’ and make sure not to overfeed him etc…makes me doubt I’m up to the job some days, but all I can do is my best right?! I have also been suffering from puppy blues when it seems like there is no respite or light at the end of the tunnel, but appears I am not alone in this way of thinking reading posts from this forum. Just hoping I can get through this and end up with another loving loyal doggy friend

Most times I see a beagle, it tends to be on its own, and I can hear someone in the far distance calling 'Bertie! Bertie!' Recall seems to be a tough concept for them... but at least if yours is as foodie as they tend to be, that should help with training.

All puppies are challenging, and each breed type offers its own specific challenges, so seen overall, beagles are no more and no less stressful than any other type. Recall is definitely a big stumbling block with hounds, but it can be achieved with time and cunning, and the understanding that it will never be 100%. There are plenty of pluses to beagles as well.

Can't add anything re Beagles, or just pups for that matter... other than when you're having a, um, difficult day, maybe take some time out and look through the totally cute photos of Snoopy, remember the progress you have made, then take a deep breath or 3 and find comfort in the knowledge they aren't pups forever!
