I have a 9wk old Labrador who is lovely but she bites quite a bit. We have only had her 2 and a half wks but have a 3yr old in the house so want her out of the biting habit ASAP!

I have never really been close to a dog before Penny (my lab!) and admittedly can be a little scared when she starts her biting spree on me! I am just wondering what the best thing is to do to help stop biting? I am constantly saying no and I stop playing with her until she calms down but then when I go back she starts again...

Thank you in advance! :- )

Play biting (mouthing) is COMPLETELY normal in a puppy. Its how they explore their new world and interact, and clearly you are lots of fun to interact with :) but best to try to get it under control. The technique which worked best for me was to use a disappointed 'uh-oh!' when mouthing was happening and quickly introduce a toy which was acceptable for biting. Make the toy as exciting as possible as it needs to complete with how much fun you are!! Squeak it, move it and give lots and lots of praise when pup mouths that.

If the mouthing continues or increases, then as well as the 'uh-oh' signal, you could immediately stop all play, stand up turn your back and ignore (as best as you can) any attempts for attention. You may find the mouthing increases here as pup tries to get attention, but ignore and then again try to re-direct to toy.

Good luck!

Hi I have just got Meg my 9 week old pup she's a Jackrussle , I also have Jenna my older dog who is the softest girl ever but meg being a pup keeps nipping and biting her when she gets to excited and Jenna will not even growl at her. I didn't know whether to try a diversion with a treat to get her away from Jenna . Please if anyone has been in this situation before let me know what the best thing to do is.

Thank you ;)
